(CNN) -- A heavily armed gunman killed at least 14 people and wounded 50 more during an early Friday morning screening of the new Batman movie at an Aurora, Colorado, theater, police Chief Dan Oates told reporters.

Police arrested a man believed to be the shooter in a rear parking lot of the theater, Frank Fania, a police spokesman, told CNN. The suspect was not immediately identified, though Fania said he was believed to be in his early 20s.

"He did not resist. He did not put up a fight," Fania said. Police seized a rifle and a handgun from the suspect, and another gun was found in the theater, he said.

Witness in theater 9 said someone besides the shooter threw a canister from the back of the theater, and the shooter threw somethign from the front

Witness confirm accomplice

Witnesses on 9NEWS

Shooter walked in through the emergency exit down front and immediately after the canister was thrown from behind.

These two guys are definitely saying more than 1 guy was involved.

Says people from other theaters were trying to get a look during the panic and they likely were shot as well.

-Shooter walked in calmly through the emergency door by the screen after the show began (according to the witness no one reacted because they thought it was part of the show)

-Calmly tossed two tear gas containers in to the air

-Waited for them to explode

-Upon explosion, fired a single shot into the air and then began rapid fire (did not appear to have any target)

The entire human race sickens me. Who takes their family or their date to the theater and expects to get shot? Id heard this was gang related but also heard the guy was some kind of nut job. Whatever the reason, there's no excuse, no reason for this.
Just shut up. Just shut the fuck up right now.

I often wonder why someone decides doing something like this is ok. Life is hard. Sometimes it isn't fair. That's no reason to shoot up a movie theater. Maybe I was raised better or to have more sense. I get angry too sometimes. I don't always get what I want. But its never occured to me to go on a rampage.

ABC
A California woman who identified herself as the mother of James Holmes, the 24-year-old man federal authorities said is the suspect in a mass shooting in an Aurora, Colorado movie theater, told ABC News her son was likely the culprit, saying, "You have the right person."

The woman, contacted at her home in San Diego, spoke briefly with ABC News and immediately expressed concern her son may be involved in the shooting death of at least 12 people overnight.

"You have the right person," she said, apparently speaking on gut instinct. "I need to call the police... I need to fly out to Colorado."

Holmes, 24, was identified by federal authorities as the man in custody, accused of killing at least 12 people and injuring 50 others during a midnight showing of the blockbuster movie "The Dark Knight Rises."

Local news reports showed aerial video of police cautiously searching Holmes' apartment, some five miles from the Century Aurora 16 theater, as the suspect reportedly told police he had explosives inside. A thousand miles away in San Diego, several police cars have arrived at the home of Holmes' mother in San Diego.

I hope James dies a slow painful death for the terrible heartache he has caused so many families. Horribly sad.

Unless his mother is a monster, she must be absolutely sick to her stomach to think that her son is responsible for this. Heartbreaking.

I am going to assume this guy had some major issues for his Mum not to be surprised that he would commit this type of atrocity.

Also why was there a 3 month old at the damn movie, not because of the violence I know the baby wouldn't understand, but the noise, theaters are loud, even for me, that could cause serious hearing damage to a baby's ears.
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

victim Christopher Rapoza of Brooklyn, New York

Police said Holmes’ apartment is booby trapped, leading authorities to evacuate five surrounding buildings. Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said bomb technicians are determining how to disarm flammable or explosive material in the third-floor apartment. He says police could be there some time.

Oates says pictures from inside the apartment are fairly disturbing and the devices look to be sophisticated. FBI agents and police used a hook and ladder fire truck and put a camera at the end of 12-foot pole inside Holmes’ apartment, which is about four miles from the theater.
