Gilbert Collar and his mother

This should help answer some questions: it has been confirmed by campus officials that the confrontation between student Gilbert Collar and the campus security officer (now on administrative leave pending investigation) was recorded by security cameras.

The video and other information has been turned over to the district attorney and the Mobile County Sheriff's Office for review.

I suppose simply shooting the mom 22 years ago would have prevented this tragedy.

This is tough to call.

One thing certain is this parcelling out of police powers to every entuty is wasteful of resources and highly inefficient. A real cop would have more training for this sort of crap and I know damn well there's not enough police activity on campus to warrant a full time cop.

These things didn't happen as much when there weren't twenty police departments patroling the same jurisdiction. I suspect a lot of shooting like this are unjustified but how can you tell in an individual case with a lying press and undertrained "cop".

Details released today:

Gilbert Collar had taken LSD at a concert (according to people at the concert). He assaulted a few other people before banging on the campus security door, according to news reports. The campus security surveillance video shows him naked and sweating at the time.

The campus officer, Austin, went to the door without taking his pepper spray or baton; gun drawn. Officer Austin was chased 50 ft. outside by Collar. When Collar got within 5 feet of him, Officer Austin shot Collar in the chest. Austin had called for back-up first, but approached Collar before it arrived; the back-up officer arrived almost immediately after the shooting.

Yesterday, the Alabama University PD admitted that Officer Austin WAS carrying pepper spray and a baton during the confrontation with student Gilbert Collar.

The security video of the incident was shown to the Collar family, their reps and media this week (not for public release). The Collar family and their attorney (former Alabama Lt. Governor Beasley) are claiming that the shooting was unjustified because Collar never made a move for the officer's weapon, never touched the officer, and could have been seeking help from the police. Student protests were held on campus this week.

The toxicology report has not yet been completed.

Description of video contents and photos of Officer Austin included here:

Still does not sound like the cop was wrong to shoot. I haven't seen the video, but it sounds like the cop did things right. Kid is naked middle of the night and beating on t he door, obviously something is wrong with him. Cop comes outside, weapon in hand, I would too and have many times while investigating noises outside. You never know, could be an ambush out there. Once he is outside, gun in hand, the kid has no weapon, but a crazy motherfucker can be dangerous just the same. Kid comes at the cop instead of doing what he was told, comes at the cop, cop has no taser because he isn't trained to use it, doesn't sound like he has time to change weapons to baton or spray. Think of this, the cop has his weapon pointed right at the kid, the kid knows this and still moves in on the cop.
Stupid is as stupid does, drugs can get you killed, prime example
