Snippets from Fountain of Sorrow - Jackson Browne

You were turning 'round to see who was behind you
And I took your childish laughter by surprise
And at the moment that my camera happened to find you
There was just a trace of sorrow in your eyes

But when you see through love's illusions, there lies the danger
And your perfect lover just looks like a perfect fool
So you go running off in search of a perfect stranger
While the loneliness seems to spring from your life
Like a fountain from a pool

O' beautiful, for spacious skies
But now those skies are threatening
They're beating plowshares into swords
For this tired old man that we elected king
Armchair warriors often fail
And we've been poisoned by these fairy tales
The lawyers clean up all details
Since daddy had to lie

But I know a place where we can go
And wash away this sin
We'll sit and watch the clouds toll by
And the tall grass wave in the wind
Just lay your head back on the ground
And let your hair spill all around me
Offer up your best defense
But this is the end
This is the end of the innocence

RIP Alvin Lee

I'd Love to Change the World

Everywhere is freaks and hairies
Dykes and fairies, tell me where is sanity
Tax the rich, feed the poor
Till there are no rich no more

I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you

Population keeps on breeding
Nation bleeding, still more feeding economy
Life is funny, skies are sunny
Bees make honey, who needs money, monopoly

I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you

World pollution, there's no solution
Institution, electrocution
Just black and white, rich or poor
Them and us, stop the war

I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you

MS, your thread about the pompously fascinating crowd made me think of these lyrics. Every once in a while, I feel the same.

I wish that for just one time, you could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment, I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time, you could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is to see you

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation in the English way
The time is gone the song is over, thought I'd something more to say

Home, home again
I like to be there when I can
When I come in cold and tired
It's good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells

I loved Mellencamp's writing on this entire album. You could sense a certain maturity that he had reached (for instance dropping 'Cougar') with this effort and the subsequent "The Lonesome Jubilee".

I'm probably a huge fan because his Midwestern roots shine through in much of his writing.

On a Greyhound thirty miles beyond Jamestown
He saw the sun set on the Tennessee line
He looked at the young man who was riding beside him
He said I'm old kind of worn out inside

I worked my whole life in the steel mills of Gary
And my father before me I helped build this land
Now I'm seventy-seven and with God as my witness
I earned every dollar that passed through my hands

My family and friends are the best thing I've known
Through the eye of the needle I'll carry them home

CHORUS
Days turn to minutes
And minutes to memories
Life sweeps away the dreams
That we have planned
You are young and you are the future
So suck it up and tough it out
And be the best you can

The rain hit the old dog in the twilight's last gleaming
He said Son it sounds like rattling old bones
This highway is long but I know some that are longer
By sunup tomorrow I guess I'll be home

Through the hills of Kentucky 'cross the Ohio river
The old man kept talking 'bout his life and his times
He fell asleep with his head against the window
He said an honest man's pillow is his peace of mind

This world offers riches and riches will grow wings
I don't take stock in those uncertain things

CHORUS

The old man had a vision but it was hard for me to follow
I do things my way and I pay a high price
When I think back on the old man and the bus ride
Now that I'm older I can see he was right

Another hot one out on highway eleven
This is my life It's what I've chosen to do
There are no free rides No one said it'd be easy
The old man told me this my son i'm telling it to you

I like this part.........

This is my life It's what I've chosen to do
There are no free rides No one said it'd be easy
The old man told me this my son i'm telling it to you

It relays the old mans misgivings with the hope his son fixes them and does'nt do the same.
He ain't heavy, he's my brother.

Someone had mentioned the Man of Steel in another thread, so here's a well-written tribute to him:

I can't stand to fly
I'm not that naive

I'm just out to find
The better part of me

I'm more than a bird, I'm more than a plane
I'm more than some pretty face beside a train
And it's not easy to be me

I wish that I could cry
Fall upon my knees

Find a way to lie
About a home I'll never see

It may sound absurd, but don't be naive
Even heroes have the right to bleed

I may be disturbed, but won't you concede
Even heroes have the right to dream
It's not easy to be me

Up, up and away, away from me
It's all right, you can all sleep sound tonight
I'm not crazy, or anything

I can't stand to fly
I'm not that naive
Men weren't meant to ride
With clouds between their knees

I'm only a man in a silly red sheet
Digging for kryptonite on this one way street

Only a man in a funny red sheet
Looking for special things inside of me

Inside of me
Inside me
Yeah, inside me
Inside of me

I'm only a man
In a funny red sheet
I'm only a man
Looking for a dream

I'm only a man
In a funny red sheet
And it's not easy

Its not easy to be me

His music was great...way back in the day. He's always been an asshole, but now he's a screaming liberal asshole. When I go to a concert, I want to hear some music...not his political bullshit.

He used to sell out concerts in a matter of minutes, especially here in Indiana. He couldn't even sell out the 3,000 seat Embassy theater here in the Fort last year.

I give him A LOT of credit for all the Fame Aid concerts, and Rain on the Scarecrow is one of my favorites.

Scarecrow on a wooden cross Blackbird in the barn
Four hundred empty acres that used to be my farm
I grew up like my daddy did My grandpa cleared this land
When I was five I walked the fence while grandpa held my hand

Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
This land fed a nation This land made me proud
And Son I'm just sorry there's no legacy for you now
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow

The crops we grew last summer weren't enough to pay the loans
Couldn't buy the seed to plant this spring and the Farmers Bank foreclosed
Called my old friend Schepman up to auction off the land
He said John it's just my job and I hope you understand
Hey calling it your job ol' hoss sure don't make it right
But if you want me to I'll say a prayer for your soul tonight
And grandma's on the front porch swing with a Bible in her hand
Sometimes I hear her singing "Take me to the Promised Land"
When you take away a man's dignity he can't work his fields and cows

There'll be blood on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
Blood on the scarecrow Blood on the plow

Well there's ninety-seven crosses planted in the courthouse yard
Ninety-seven families who lost ninety-seven farms
I think about my grandpa and my neighbors and my name
And some nights I feel like dyin' Like that scarecrow in the rain

Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
This land fed a nation This land made me proud
And Son I'm just sorry they're just memories for you now
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow

Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
This land fed a nation This land made me proud
And Son I'm just sorry they're just memories for you now
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow

I'm a few days early, but this one popped-up, from the archives, during a shuffle session.

Ides of March - Vehicle

Hey, well I'm the friendly stranger
In the black sedan
Oh won't you hop inside my car?
I got pictures, got candy, I am a lovable man
I'd like to take you to the nearest star

I'm your vehicle baby
I'll take you anywhere you wanna go
I'm your vehicle woman
By now I'm sure you know

That I love ya (love you)
Need ya (need you)
I want to, got to have you child
Great God in heaven, you know I love you

I was born to run,
I was born to dream,
The craziest boy you ever seen,
I gotta do it my way,
Or no way at all.

And I was here to please,
I'm even on knees
Makin love to whoever I please,
I gotta do it my way,
Or no way at all.

And then you came around,
Tried to tie me down,
I was such a clown,
You had to have it your way,
Or no way at all.

Well I've had all I can take,
I can't take it no more,
I'm gonna pack my bags and fly......baby,
Or no way at all.

So why don't you turn me loose,
Turn me loose,
Turn me loose,
I gotta do it my way,
Or no way at all.

My first recollection of this song is from the mud-wrestling scene in Stripes. I've loved it ever since.

Hand me down my walkin' cane, hand me down my hat

Hurry now and don't be late cause we ain't got time to chat

You and me we're goin' out to catch the latest sounds

Guaranteed to blow your mind so high you won't come down, no

Those of you who work out consistently probably have a music mix to assist you. If this isn't on your I-Pod, add it soon:

No more games, I'm a change what you call rage
Tear this motherfuckin' roof off, like two dogs caged
I was playin' in the beginnin', the mood all changed
I been chewed up and spit out and booed off stage

But I kept rhymin' and stepped right in the next cipher
Best believe somebody's payin' the Pied Piper
All the pain inside amplified by the
Fact that I can't get by with my nine to five

And I can't provide the right type of
Life for my family, 'cause man these goddamn
Food stamps don't buy diapers
And there's no movie, there's no Mekhi Phifer, this is my life

And these times are so hard, and it's getting even harder
Tryin' to feed and water my seed, plus teeter-totter
Caught up between bein' a father and a Prima Donna
Baby mama drama screamin' on and too much for me to wanna

Stay in one spot, another day of monotony
Has gotten me to the point I'm like a snail I've got
To formulate a plot or end up in jail or shot
Success is my only motherfuckin' option, failure's not

Mom I love you, but this trailer's got to go
I cannot grow old in Salem's Lot
So here I go, it's my shot, feet fail me not
This may be the only opportunity that I got

You better lose yourself in the music, the moment
You own it, you better never let it go
You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow
This opportunity comes once in a lifetime

They say this city will make you dirty, but you look alright
You feel real pretty when he's holding you tight
City will make you mean but that's just make-up on your face
Love will wash you clean in the night's disgrace

Find a block where your people can find you
Keep your third eye watching behind you
You never know when you're making a memory
They will wish they were here together again, someday

I can't light no more of your darkness.

All my pictures seem to fade to black and white.

I'm growing tired and time stands still before me.

Frozen here, on the ladder of my life.

So it's too late, to save myself from falling.

I took a chance and changed your way of life.

But you misread my meaning when I met you.

Closed the door, and left me blinded by the light...

Don't let the sun go down on me.

Although I search myself, it's always someone else that I see

I'd just allow a fragment of your life to wander free

Cause losing everything is like the sun going down on me.

I can't find, oh, the right romantic line

But see me once, and see the way I feel

Don't discard me, just because you think I mean you harm

But these cuts I have, they need love, to help them heal.

Don't let the sun go down on me

Although I search myself, it's always someone else I see

I'd just allow a fragment of your life to wander free

Cause losing everything is like the sun going down on me...
