RIP Leila Fowler

According to reports, Leila Fowler was found dead by her 12 year old brother on Saturday.

The brother is reportedly not a suspect; he saw an intruder leaving the house. A neighbor also reported seeing a man fleeing the house and has provided LE with a description.

The Fowlers live in Valley Springs, California. LE went house-to-house in search of a child killer this weekend and are advising residents to stay inside.

I'm curious about where the parents were located when the stabbing took place. Haven't been able to find any information on that front yet.

I find this case to be very odd. What's the motive? When was she last seen alive and yeah, what's the story with the parents?

I hope they release more details soon.

This kind of shit makes me crazy.

It's gotten to the point where I'm paranoid about either of my kids simply being out in the front yard unattended.

Fortunately, we live on a well-populated street, but, it only takes 60 seconds for some asshole to come and snatch your kid.

After reading the story, this will turn out to be someone very local.

An opportunist who probably knew the family first-hand.

So many fucking pigs out there.

Convict him and throw him in a shark-tank.

Some more details being released today:

A manhunt for a suspect considered "armed and dangerous" is underway in California after 8-year-old Leila Fowler was found stabbed to death in her home.

Leila Fowler and her 12-year-old brother were home alone in separate rooms on Saturday when the boy told police he found an intruder in the home, according to ABC News' Sacramento affiliate KXTV.

The 12-year-old called his parents, who alerted sheriff's deputies. The intruder fled and the boy found his sister with severe injuries, according to KXTV. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Law enforcement agencies are searching for a suspect described as a 6-foot-tall man with a muscular build. He was last seen wearing a black long-sleeved shirt and blue pants. The suspect is considered "armed and dangerous," according to police.

Police have been searching Fowler's home in Valley Springs, Calif., a rural town 60 miles southeast of Sacramento, and the surrounding areas.

"We did collect some fingerprints during that search and we also collected what we believe to be DNA," Calaveras County Sheriff's Capt. Jim Macedo said at a news conference. "We're searching extensively into attics and storage sheds. It is a difficult area to search."

The area has a lot of empty homes and rocky areas.

Police said Leila's brother is not a suspect at this time, but they have been interviewing him.

"We are continuing to talk to him, which would be normal because he was the last person with the child," Macedo said.

Authorities are also asking for any information on anyone who may have left town unexpectedly after the crime or has unexplained injuries, according to an alert on the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office website.

========================================

Still don't know what time on Saturday this took place and where the parents were located, but it is confirmed that there were no adults with Leila and her 12 year old brother at the home.

If the DNA and fingerprints that police claim to have collected belong to the killer, hopefully he's in the national databases and he can be identified quickly.

I heard just now that it was around 1pm on Saturday. They didn't say where the parents were.

Apparently the parents described the family as "blended" and there are 5 kids in the Valley Springs area and 3 others that live elsewhere.

Thanks, user.

I hope this isn't related to custody in any way, or some kind of revenge against one or both of the parents. Seen too many of those.

I agree with MS. If this wasn't done by a family member, most likely it was someone who knew that no parents would be home at the time.

She was so young and died brutally, like Jade Morris. Makes me extremely mad and sad at the same time.

Tragic. I get so sick and tired of reading about this crap.

The parents, who have not been named by authorities, were at a Little League game at the time their daughter was attacked, Campbell said.

If this happened at 1 pm on Saturday with the parents at a little league game, perhaps Leila was ill or simply didn't want to go and her 12 year old brother stayed home with her?

Twelve year old kids can be certified by the Red Cross babysitting course and be legal to watch their siblings and other children. Perhaps that was the case here.

Thanks for the story Cheyne. I don't like the parents. They seem to be moving on pretty damn quickly with memorial funds, visiting the school etc. Geez.

Yeah, they haven't spoken publicly yet but they did want to let the public know, through their attorney, about the memorial fund. 78

As an aside, you learn something new every day. I was typing "publicly" as "publically" and I kept getting the red line telling me I was misspelling it. Who knew?

The Columbia Guide to Standard English says there is no difference between the two words; they are just two different spellings, with "publicly" being the most common and accepted form. I imagine "publically" is used more often in law because it is a bigger word and looks more impressive.

This bothers me a bit too.

It's one thing to accept some donations from those in the community to cover funeral costs if they can't afford it, but another to establish a formal memorial fund, imo.

Staying open minded, but it is odd that the parents are off the radar on this. Wondering if they've been poly'd. Also wondering if there will be a press conference with status soon; I'll check around.

VALLEY SPRINGS (CBS/AP) – Authorities in Calaveras County say the slaying of an 8-year-old girl at her home does not appear to have stemmed from a botched robbery or other crime gone wrong.

According to the Modesto Bee, Calaveras County Sheriff Gary Kuntz said it appears the unknown intruder intended to attack Leila Fowler.

Kuntz spoke at a hastily called news conference on Monday night.

Investigators say that nearby sex offenders are being investigated, but wouldn’t reveal whether Leila was sexually assaulted.

It just sounds so...odd that a grown man would break into (or walk into) a house to kill an eight year old girl, then run away from a 12 year old boy.

I noticed in the article HotDog posted that the police think they have DNA from the perp. They will not say if Leila was sexually assaulted. Perhaps the perp is a pedo and saw Leila at school, followed her home and waited for his opportunity.

I hope they find the bastard quickly. I really hope a member of John Q. Public strings him up and cuts off his balls.

Seems like LE is holding a lot back on this one, Cheyne. All possibilities are still open in my mind: family member, stranger, acquaintance...

I too hope like hell that Leila wasn't sexually assaulted, but fear the worst. If LE believes it's a local (either someone close to Leila or a mere acquaintance/stranger) who watched then preyed on Leila, perhaps they're holding back on some of the details to leave the door open for him to come forward thinking that he can minimize his crime?

Likewise, I'm wondering if LE is publicly fabricating when claiming to have DNA and prints known to be the perp's, in order to make someone nervous (attempting to elicit a confession or strong reaction).

IF it turns out that Leila was sexually assaulted, I so hope that LE was actually able to retrieve DNA samples from her body this quickly (DNA found in the house would take longer to test/differentiate from that of all the family members, imo) and that the DNA/prints can be run through the databases and generate a hit quickly.

P.s. Your hope for John Q. Public justice sounds perfectly appropriate to me in this case. Whoever did this to Leila is the worst kind of piece of shit possible; he needs to be stopped before he does it again.

"As soon as she comes over, she runs into the back room, and says, 'grandpa, grandpa.' And I get [ the guitar] hooked up for her. She plays it without any encouragement. She wants to do it on her own," Dennis Fowler said.

"There's no logic to this. I have a hard time believing, trying to understand why something like this could happen," Fowler said. "There's no motive to do this."

Fowler said his son and fiance felt so secure in their Valley Springs neighborhood it wasn't unusual for them to leave doors unlocked. He speculated it was someone stealing things from the house Saturday, who came across Leila and her 12-year-old brother.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Looks like Leila lived with her father and her father's fiancee.

The police disagree with grandpa's speculation that this was a robbery gone wrong.

So, now we know:

Dad: Barney Fowler
Dad's fiancee: ???
Mom: Krystal Walters
Paternal Gramps: Dennis Fowler

I don't know anything about the living environment or other family members at this time.

---------------------------------------------------

A vigil was held for Leila tonight. Didn't see any indication as to whether family attended or spoke. Just a quote from a family friend.

"She was really, really sweet, but had her shy moments, happy little girl, cared about a lot of people, a lot," family friend Kennedie Pekarek said.
