There are a lot of posts on FB expressing outrage that Bruce is being called a hero and given an award. I have to agree. Yes, he should live his life as he chooses. But he's no hero.
I get why she's a hero to some people. I think it took courage, though it doesn't make Jenner a hero in my eyes either.

I'm actually pretty burned out on the story already. It's everywhere.

I did think that the Diane Sawyer interview was really interesting and, in my opinion, Jenner was very sincere in describing the pain that he and other closeted transgenders go through. I learned a few things from Jenner and the specialists who were interviewed.

But, I'm not personally interested in Jenner's make-up routine or wardrobe choices or any of that stuff that's showing up in the media pages now, nor in watching the reality show.
HotD, how did you feel when it was discovered that Marv Albert liked to wear women's underwear, and he considered it a turn-on?

Shouldn't he be some kind of hero too?
hah
She has accepted herself in spite of all the surrounding pressure not to do so. She now lives authentically and true to herself. IMO that is heroic.
I'm not sure why you're asking me that, MS -- I said that I don't view Jenner as a hero.

Anyway, I don't think either Jenner or Albert are heroes or villains for wearing women's clothing.

But, Marv didn't proactively come out and admit that he was a cross-dresser. He didn't attempt to help promote awareness and understanding of cross-dressers. He was outed as a result of a sexual assault. So, it's a very different scenario in any case.

Plus, cross-dressers can alleviate their discomfort or satisfy their urges by putting on female clothing. It's much more complex and life-altering for people who actually identify as the opposite sex and feel trapped in their own bodies, as I understand it.

I didn't think Oscar De La Hoya was a hero when his cross-dressing photos were leaked to the media either.

But, maybe he and other cross-dressers will feel more free to open up about it, if they want, as people come to understand the issues better?

None of it bothers or offends me.

I don't think any rational person would be upset about a person finally being able to live the way they want and be true to themselves.

Because of Bruce's link to the Kardashians this just feels contrived and unauthentic (to me at least). It's so over the top and so 'in your face' that it's hard for me to be happy for shim.
It's not even like when Chaz Bono became a man. It was still all over the media, but this is more over the top with his photo shoots and crap.
In life, we should strive for living life as our "authentic self." Not an easy feat for most of us so I say good luck to you C. Jenner. I truly believe she is trying to bring attention to the issue of gender identity......and remember this person is 65 years old.....not bad.....and I think the female brain needed to match a female body and she is free at last.....I understand how difficult this must be for his children. It would be difficult for any family....It will change the family dynamics in so many ways.. Good luck to you, C. Jenner.
Yeah, and he could give a shit about his family. There is an obvious monetary gain involved in dressing as a woman for the front page of a well read publication. Not everyone has that courage.
And why would it be difficult for his family? They have already accepted him/her whatever is the color of the day today I guess.
Somebody actually started a petition to strip Jenner of his Olympic Medals....

petition

a little over 8,000 signatures (well electronic signatures) so far....

hah That's just dumb. hah

Here's the petition -

Dear International Olympic Committee,

It has recently come to light that gold medalist Bruce Jenner is in fact transgender, and therefore, identifies as a woman. We congratulate Ms. Jenner on these new developments and wish her the best. However, this creates somewhat of a problem as Ms. Jenner (as talented as she is) claims that she has always believed herself to be truly female, and therefore, was in violation of committee rules regarding women competing in men's sports and vice versa. Therefore, it is with a heavy heart that we must ask whether or not it is proper that Ms. Jenner should retain her olympic records in light of this, as we must now either claim that Bruce Jenner and Caitlyn Jenner are two entirely different people (which we know is not true), or that Bruce Jenner was, in fact, a woman participating in a men's event. It is only fair to all involved that women receive their credit as champions of the Decathalon and that the men racing Ms. Jenner are not expected to compete with a superior, streamlined being such as herself.

We urge Ms. Jenner to support the transgender community by giving up the medals earned by competing against the wrong gender.

Thank you, and congratulations to Ms. Jenner for her courage!

#givebackthegold.
^ What a petty passive-aggressive narrative.

I'm sure the woman who wrote it has no bigoted political agenda whatsoever. 78

"...men racing Ms. Jenner are not expected to compete with a superior, streamlined being such as herself." Jenner was physically a man when he competed. Her claim doesn't even make sense.

Stupid.
I love it.

Yup.
Well there's at least 8000 narrow minded fuckwits trying to get all up in somebody else's business before tidying up their own back yards. I imagine the whole Jenner thing will affect their lives about as much as a three dollar bill.

Why?

Because you agree that somehow Jenner really didn't fairly earn the medals that he won 40 years ago before any transition began?

OR

You just love it when somebody makes illogical claims in a thinly veiled bigoted attempt to defame someone if you don't approve of that someone's lifestyle choices?

Rhetorical.
hah make that 8001
