It's not normal, Maggot. If it was, transgenders would not be stigmatized. Transgenders account for a very small portion of the population.
But, is it natural? Some of us believe that some people are born identifying with a gender that doesn't match their bodies, and some of us don't.
Either way, it doesn't really matter to me. Whether by choice or by nature, I think adults should be able to live their lives on their own terms even if it's weird to me. And, the fact that there are transgender men out there in no way affects my vision of masculinity.
P.s. If your plan was to run around California hittin' on chicks and bagging babes and such, and you are seriously fearful of encountering a trans, I think you're right to just stay put and avoid scary California.
