Would you travelers be afraid to go to Cozumel and Belize, Mexico? Friends are going in January on a 7-night cruise leaving from New Orleans. (Also stopping at Mahogany Bay) Trying to get my husband (a very old man) and me to join them. (He's a whole year older.)
I really want to go - been there before and it's so beautiful (plus "casino" on the ship).

that's just me, i wouldn't let anyone i love go to mexico for any reason. "safe" tourist destination or not.

I've been to Mexico 7 times since 2004, but not since December of 2007.
My wife is a little skittish about going there now simply because she doesn't want to orphan the kids, but, if it were MY decision, I'd really have no fear of going to any of the tourist destinations there.
A couple friends of mine have taken their entire families to Cancun/Cozumel/Playa Del Carmen and it's been very uneventful. Another co-worker just spent 10 days in Belize.
I would say stay in the 'resort' area, and you'd be just fine.
