You know those Brinks and ADT and Slomans alarm system ads crack me up.
They use all kinds of scare tactics making you feel like if you don't have an alarm you are so not safe. They show some idiot burglar who actually kicks down a door and runs if he hears an alarm. All the people are in the house, he's outside casing the place and breaks in with someone home.
First of all, burglars wait until you're gone to rob you unless they're rapists or demented fiends who want to torture, kill and then rob you.
Alarms are not hooked up to any police station directly - they go to a central station and the guy calls you when he hears the alarm, THEN they call the cops if you say things are not cool.
Now, if you are being robbed, don't you think this fiend has plenty of time to kill you, rob you and get out of there before the cops get there? YES.
Alarms are good for fire. Burglar alarms usually come with fire alarms. If a fire alarm goes off, the fire dept is dispatched before you get the call from central station.
Burglar alarms are good but they are not even worth the money unless you have a GOOD CCTV system hooked up to it too. You'll never catch the burglar unless he's stupid enough to stick around.
ALL alarm companies put a sign out on the property somewhere saying it's alarmed too. Burglar would have to be the dumbest out there to rob you if there's a sign.
How do I know all this? My BF installs and maintains alarms for a living. He says what they try to sell you on the TV is a joke.
