Outrage after woman flashes middle finger at Arlington National Cemetery and posts photo to Facebook to brag about it
Lindsey Stone posted the picture of herself making the obscene gesture at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, next to a sign at the military cemetery that asks for 'Silence and Respect,' in October and the snapshot quickly went viral.

She's a disrespectful jackass, but it doesn't offend me.
If I were a friend or family member of hers, I'd be offended to be associated with such an idiot though.
She has no power to affect how our soldiers are generally regarded, imo. Hope she enjoys the "respect" that she is certainly receiving since this went viral.

I think there are very many stupid people out there that do things without thinking about it and they should be put in the stocks in the center of town and pummeled with rotting food.

Should she and her co-worker lose their jobs because of this? Does the place they work have the right to fire them?

I say "no", I don't think it's right for her to be fired for what she does on her own time unless it affects her work performance.

Like a tree falling in the forest. If there is no one there to hear it, does it make a sound?
(Accessing her account, it's fun to read how she takes pride in being a lumberjack and brags of the competition(s) she has been in chopping trees.)
Self-promotion never gets me riled up. The fact she posted this herself on her own Facebook tells me she is seeking what it is some are now giving her.

She did it for a laugh and it came back and bit her in the ass. I feel sorry for her as she didn't do it to be disrespectful.

So why exactly did she do it? It's not funny. She is a jackass.

She had the pic taken and posted it on Facebook so her friends would laugh and get a kick out of it. Unfortunately for her, it was taken from her page and distributed.
. "This is just us, being the douchebags that we are, challenging authority in general. Much like the pic posted the night before, of me smoking right next to a no smoking sign. OBVIOUSLY we meant NO disrespect to people that serve or have served our country."

I'm with your Mom on this one... she's an adult (30 years old), works for a non-profit, and she was on a work related or sponsored trip when this occurred. While she may just be being a self described "douchebag", she conducted herself unprofessionally and potentially made herself a liability for her employer. I can imagine fund raising might be more difficult than it need be because of something like this...
This would be an easy decision if I were her boss. I'd fire her, and the retarded co-worker who took the picture and didn't have enough sense to not.

I agree with Jim. She is old enough to know better than to pull a stunt like that. Everyone knows that anything posted on FB is likely to get out all over the internet. Smoking by a non-smoking sign is one thing but giving the finger outside a military cemetary is rude and disrespectful. There is nothing funny about it.

Anything you say on the internet can and will be used against you.
I think it's kind of fucked up but that's the way it is. Had it not been for the internet, Petraeus would still be the director of the CIA.

Maybe if she did this on he own time. But she was working at the time. It's a poor representation of her employer. She should at least get a reprimand and she should issue a public apology. One that doesn't say "being the douch that I am....."

One of the new things getting passed this month is giving 22 departments in the government the ability to look at anyones e-mail account. Big brother is here.

There is a time and a place for humor; this is an obvious example of not being one of them. If she was ignorant enough to post something so disrespectful for "all to see"; then it should not be a shock to have some sort of fallout from it.
As for anyone's employer taking action in regards to social media sites; I fully support it. Call it whatever you want, but a majority of employees cannot seperate their personal and professional life on the job as it is because they lack the mindset to do so. Honestly, I do not post anything in regards to my profession.

Your OP link is broken for me, Jim.
I found a story on Huffington Post and it says that LIFE is a Cape Cod-based nonprofit that houses adults with learning disabilities. It's not clear whether Stone went to the cemetary during her own time while on a business trip, or if for some reason going to the cemetary was a work assignment.
In either event, it does change my opinion. Imo, there is more cause to fire her if the trip was paid for by LIFE. OTH, I've been to plenty of conventions on employers' dimes and I dont' think it's anybody's business what I did while not attending the convention itself. I was never stupid enough to take pictures (and don't do FB), but lots of idiots out there who need their jobs.
IDK, if she gets fired for being stupid, it won't bother me since it was at least on work- related time. If she isn't fired and this a wake up call, that won't bother me either.
