DELAYING THE START

I just heard a headline about delaying the start of the school day because kids aren't getting enough sleep and it's an epidemic. Seriously? If kids aren't getting enough sleep isn't that on the parent and the kid? Why in the world would the time be changed rather than forcing the kids to develop some kind of schedule?

Kids are getting really over-scheduled.

Here, the school day begins at 8:30 (K-6). So, they need to be up by 7:30 at the latest to get dressed and eat breakfast then catch the bus.

School dismisses at 3:20. Home by 3:45. Everyone has homework, regardless of grade, and of course, there are activities to participate in.

My kids have a very strict bed time of 8:00 so I feel like they're rested, but I know a lot I parents allow their gradeschoolers to stay up until 10:00.

Youngsters need their sleep.

They already do. They have awards for perfect attendance, as well as "most improved attendance." We're raising underachievers here.

In NY Thing 1 had to get the bus at 6:35am. That is way too early.

Actually, nowadays, they do....it's called getting to go to the next grade. No child left behind...remember?

Common core should really whack things about. Charter schools are the way. I might put my kids in one this year, either that or private school at 18,000 per year. I just wish I would get an educational tax waver for it. But the teachers union is strong and set in stone. It's a mess. Home schooling is tedious and requires constant attention.
It's a matter of what's good for the kids in the long run and might be worth the investment. Private tutoring is an option, or just try and talk the professor into not earning a paycheck, but that's a pride thing.
It all just kinda sucks as I was not brought up that way, though times they are " a-changin"
The fence I walk on gets skinnier and skinnier as the years wear on. Soon I truly believe that I should have joined the circus in the 70's or the Merchant Marines but it's to late for that. But at least I know whats coming and it aint lollipops and ballons.

I think my generation is the last one to not be completely fucked up. There are kids out there today working part time jobs in fast food restaurants that can't even give change without the help of a computerized register.

It's already happening, lucky retired man!

Flex time is really common and a lot of studies indicate that it leads to a more productive work force with less absenteeism.

But, that doesn't mean flex time workers who hold up or miss key meetings and other set appointment times don't get fired -- I agree with you there.

I'm not a morning person and I still have one kid left to take to school so it would be fine with me if they bumped it up to 10am. That getting up at 6:30 shit and fighting with them to get ready is for the birds.

Is anyone reading this a failure at what you do in life because you had to get up early to catch the bus/attend class? Not that I have to agree with any of this, I don't. It won't affect my life in any way. I believe that flex scheduling is for adults, it's for grownups who know how to properly manage their time, it's not for school kids. I firmly believe that if kids are not getting the sleep they need, it's on the parents. It's their problem to deal with.

I'm not posting because I care, I simply feel argumentative. I don't care if the little bastards get up on time or not. Don't even care if they pass or fail at life. Parents reap what they have raised.

I blame all of my failures in life on having to get up early for school as a child and a teen.

I plan on filing a class action suit suing the school districts for mental anguish and deprivation of basic human rights, on behalf of myself and other victims across the US.



A public rally will be held on Friday, 8/29/14. Wear gas masks -- we're in it for the long haul, my fellow failures, slackers and opportunists (Flack Ops).

The only thing I see happening with delaying the start time to an hour later is delaying bedtime to an hour later.

Our generation didn't have all the technology to keep us up ²⁴⁄₇ like the younger gen does.

I think I went to bed around 10pm most nights, and I didn't have a tv in my room...or a phone. We had 4 channels on tv that signed off at midnight.
