If it isn't one blight on society, it's another. I don't give to panhandlers or homeless myself, because I just can't afford it. If I could, I probably would. And the only two characters who matter regarding doing it or not are myself, and Karma. If your intentions are good, who cares what they do with the money?

I am not referring to the slacker tards that are in their late 20's, early 30's who bum change in front of the Starbucks. I tell them to sell off a couple of their piercings and wash dishes if they're that much down on their luck.

No, instead I mean the downtown folks who possibly fought in a couple of wars and are either disabled or slightly mentally deranged (but not enough for hospitalization).

It's those people, usually in their late 60's on up I give money too in the hopes they can get through one more night.

I always look at their shoes, and try to see if they have a cell phone. If their shoes are nicer than any of mine, or they have a phone... no moolah.

Also, if I see a person out on the corner EVERY day then NO. Go find a job.

I honestly(not made up, didn't hear a story)have a friend who makes more money panhandling than he does as a manager. Up to $500 bucks on a good day. THAT is what pisses me off. He did it as a dare to start with... then kept doing it randomly to make extra cash.

On a side note, yesterday at work, I saw a brand new Dodge Ram drop off a girl in a wheelchair, who proceded to beg for money for 3 hours before she was picked back up.

Here, I disagree. I do not believe that those who make a hell of a lot of money panhandling and scamming people, would continue in the same way if it were no longer profitable for them. As someone said earlier, those that truly ARE in need, usually do not go the panhandling route.

We were at a gas station in Miami last year, and a kid who looked about 16 years old asked if I could spear a couple of bucks so he could get food for his little brother. I gave him 4 bucks thinking it was probally a lie, but meh who cares. The gas station attendent ended up telling me that his story was true. The mother was in the hospital dying of cancer and he was trying to take care of his 3 year old brother.

It is good that you were able to help the kids, and if it were someone that young I would probably be less skeptical, but even in that situation, there are better ways for kids on the street to get help than by asking strangers for a dollar. If someone truly does look hungry, I often offer to buy them some food rather than give them money.

I understand where you're coming from and we don't really have the younger set panhandling around here anyway (though I saw plenty of that while in CA). While I feel bad for people who are down on their luck, I've helped enough of them, even people who were literally homeless, get to a better spot (at least for a while) to know that there IS help out there for them if they simply want to use it.

Depends. If they were truly down & out, they would probably just go through the system to get 'public assistance' of some type and have to live more or less within their means. If they are able bodied and truly just scamming, then yes, they would have to get some kind of 'job' or start their own business or something.

I'm never going to change it, because these people prey on the kindness and feelings of guilt in others, but if the charity suddenly STOPPED. Well, I can't really imagine what the addicts would do. I guess try to turn to a life of crime, end up getting caught and thrown in jail where they still wouldn't get their drugs.
