Can you eat them? I don't want to see people killing things just for fun. It makes me crazy.

Yes you can eat them. Sunfish get huge, I saw several in the 1000lb range when I was diving of the coast of cali back mid 80's

It must have died and washed ashore, depending on codition, fish steaks or chum or some combination thereof.

They have roadkill auctions here in the spring. They take them out of the freezer and auction them off.
