A 24-year-old man from Perth has been killed by a shark off Wedge Island, about 180km north of Perth.
The surfer, who is yet to be identified, was attacked while out with a mate about 4km south of the the island, north of the coastal fishing town of Lancelin, at about 9am.
Police are currently conducting a sea search and are searching the beach with quad bikes.
They haven’t released details of the victim because they need to identify his next of kin.
A young man who was riding a jet ski with a friend witnessed the attack. He said the shark was about 4 to 5 metres long.
“I was towing me mate on the back of the jet ski and saw a guy get attacked by a shark," he said.
“I took my mate to the shore and went straight out, there was blood everywhere.”
The man described how the shark tried to knock him off his jet ski when he reached out to the victim.
“There was a massive, massive white shark circling the body. I reached to grab the body and the shark came at me on the jet ski and tried to knock me off.
“There was nothing I could do, I did everything I could. I turned back and looked at my mate and I just thought ‘Is this real?’
“The shark was protecting the body and didn’t want me to get near it. I’m so sorry to the family and everything.”

PARIS – Authorities say a shark killed a 22-year-old surfer in the Indian Ocean waters off France's Reunion Island.
Island government spokesman Serge Bideau says the man was in a surfing spot west of the island Monday when a shark bit off his right leg.
Witnesses helped the victim, identified as island resident Alexandre Rassica, to shore where rescue workers tried in vain to resuscitate him.
The type of shark involved was not immediately clear.
The number of shark attacks has risen in Reunion Island in the last two years. There have been seven attacks -- not all fatal -- since the start of 2011.
France launched an investigation this year into the reasons behind the growing number of such attacks.

MAKO
GrindTV.com
Craig Winters, a Texas angler who traveled to Southern California in pursuit of a giant mako shark, thought he was going to have to settle on a mere 400-pound specimen that appeared off the yacht's stern. A bait was cast, and Winters waited, but suddenly a much larger shark swooped in and stole away with the bait.
"We were going to hook the 400-pounder but then the big one came in and just took it," Winters said. "I don't even know where he came from. He just took it, and went."
The mighty predator fought for four hours, jumping once at the beginning and again toward the end of the struggle, and ended up being among the largest makos ever landed, weighing 917 pounds and measuring 10-plus feet.
Winters was wearing a belt strapped to the reel and at one point the shark pulled him abruptly against the rail, and threatened to send him overboard.
"I'll tell you, for a 53-year-old that was a real chore," said Winters, who was fishing off south Orange County with Brian Cope on a 37-foot yacht out of Mako Matt's Marine in Huntington Beach.
They fished for three days. Cope had caught a couple of small blue sharks and during one of the days a large great white shark arrived off their stern.
"Matt told me how privileged we were to see the great white because there are only about 6,000 of these sharks in the world," Winters said. "But on the flip side, he said, we're not going to see any other sharks as long as he was here."
Great white sharks are protected off California. Winters and Cope were after trophy-sized makos, and finally got one.
The shark was too heavy to be hauled onto the boat so it was towed back to port. It was weighed Wednesday night on a certified scale at a Los Angeles meat processing plant.
Winters, who presumably kept the jaws, left the meat with the plant, to be donated to area homeless shelters.
Mako sharks typically average 200-300 pounds. The International Game Fish Assn. lists as the all-tackle world record a 1,221-pound specimen caught off Chatham, Mass., in 2001. (Yep, here on Cape. now we have all the whites.)
Winters' catch was made just days before the beginning of the Labor Day weekend, last major beach weekend of the summer.
not the same mako, but illustrates how ugly they are --->

Here's something I hate. I hate that he had to kill that in order to have a trophy mouth to hang on his wall. Something died so he could boast.

i don't like seeing the big sharks killed, they are very endangered.
saving grace: he left the meat with the plant, to be donated to area homeless shelters.

"They" say Mako tastes like Swordfish.
Well I never tasted Mako, but I did taste & do like Swordfish.
Anyway, that's one less fuckin monster in the sea that won't mutilate & or kill a human being.
(I've caught my fair share of 4ft sand sharks in the Jersey shores. Used them for Crab bait in my Crab traps, worked great.)

A teenage girl ‘died instantly’ when she was sliced in two by a shark while snorkelling near the beach on a paradise island in the Indian Ocean.
The 15-year-old, who lives on the French mainland, was less than 15 feet (five metres) from the shore of the island of Reunion, located off the coast of Madagascar, when the savage attack took place.
Her terrified sister was among those who saw the girl schoolgirl disappear under the water at around 3pm today.
The teenager's body was sliced in two at the torso, and then ‘a part of her body was taken away by the shark,’ said a said Gina Hoarau, the head of public safety on the island. She added: ‘The girls were in an area of St Paul bay where swimming is not allowed. She would have died instantly.

^^ Didn't one of the ME"s in the Trayvon Martin case state that your brain retains 10-15 seconds of oxygen even after a traumatic event?
I remember hearing story's of people seeming to be somewhat coherent after being beheaded by a guillotine. They'd hold the person's head up and let them look at their body, etc.

That sounds like an urban myth to me, or a legend made up to scare posh French people who were set to face Madame guillotine.
Surely as soon as your spinal cord is severed that's it, you're gone.

Three North Carolina Shark Attacks
A boy, 16, and girl, 12, whose limbs were torn off in North Carolina shark attacks were only in waist-deep water this weekend.
- The 12-year-old girl lost her arm at the elbow and suffered injuries to her leg on Oak Island on Sunday afternoon.
-Ninety minutes later, the 16-year-old boy lost his left arm below the shoulder less than two miles away.
-The grisly attacks come just days after another girl, 13, was bitten in nearby Ocean Isle Beach; she escaped with cuts to her foot but photos show how huge chunks were bitten out of her bodyboard.
The beaches were not closed between the two attacks but officials told people to get out of the water after the second incident; they are open again today.
Oak Island Town Manager Tim Holloman advised people to be a 'little more beach orientated' on Monday and said a helicopter was going up and down the coast to patrol. He described the attack as 'highly unusual'. He said: 'Oak Island is still a safe place; we're monitoring the situation.'
Witness Brenda Bouser reported, 'It was so much like a scene from Jaws.'

Shore towns hate this sorta thing and I think if they could keep news of the attacks confined to their little area they wouldn't hesitate to do so.

creepy part about the above photo is that there are two bites; that damn shark came around for another try.
Thank god I am oblivious to the opinions of others while caught in the blinding splendor of my own cleverness.
