Maths teacher crushed to death in rubbish truck 'was trying to make new life in Britain'
Scott Williams was crushed to death after climbing in a wheelie bin and being tipped into a rubbish truck
A teacher who fell asleep in a wheelie bin after a pub crawl and was crushed to death had just become a British citizen, his best friend revealed today.
The body of Scott Williams was found among rubbish when the truck was emptied more than 24 hours later.
Mr Williams, 35, is thought to have climbed into the large communal bin - which is the size of a small skip - to sleep off an evening's drinking in Brighton.
The maths teacher and rugby coach was still in the bin when it was scooped up and its contents were tipped into the lorry's crusher.
His remains were found at a waste recycling site in nearby Newhaven on Monday morning, soon after the lorry emptied its load.
One worker at the depot said: 'It is horrendous, a horrible way to go.
'It looks like he decided to go for a lie down in a skip at some point. Then he was picked up and crushed to death. It's unthinkable.'
A friend of Mr Williams said: 'He loved a drink.
'I just don't know what must have been going through his head to have got into a bin.'
The New Zealander, who lived in London, was last seen at 1am on Sunday and was reported missing by friends at 8am on Monday - an hour after his body was found.
It is not known whether the bin's contents were collected by the lorry on Monday or during Sunday.
Mr Williams had planned to settle permanently in Britain after starting a new relationship.
Today his best friend Lannon Durrant - who attended the same school as Mr Williams in their home town of Hamilton and lived with him for a time in London - said the keen sportsman had wanted to stay in the capital.
Speaking from New Zealand, he told the London Evening Standard: "He had just sorted out his British citizenship. He was going to hang around. He just started seeing a girl in the last few months, and that was one of the things keeping him there. "He was quite happy where he was - he did not want to come home."
Staff at Sussex Waste Recycling have not located the street where he climbed into one of the communal bins, which are used by residents in blocks of flats.

Director Dave Ely said: 'It could have come from anywhere.
Brighton is quite an extensive area.'
Mr Williams had been to several pubs with a friend on Saturday night during a weekend in Brighton.
A police spokesman said: 'It is assumed Scott had been in one of the wheelie bins.
'Police are investigating how he came to be there and are treating his death as unexplained rather than suspicious.'
Detective Chief Inspector Graham Pratt, of Sussex Police, said: 'What happened is an issue and where it happened is another.'
Last night, friends paid tribute to Mr Williams, of Wembley, North-West London.
Former colleague Jacqueline Glazerman, who worked with him at Harrow High and Sports College, said he was an inspiration to children, adding: 'Scott was a fantastic teacher.'
Hairdresser Donna Kearvell, 31, who grew up with him in Hamilton, New Zealand, said: 'He was really popular. He was just a big, fun guy.'
His death follows several near misses involving Brighton's bins.
Two homeless men asleep in bins almost died in separate incidents as they were lifted into lorries. Staff heard their screams and hit emergency buttons to stop the crusher.
