So You Think Your Insured ?

Maggot Wrote:I pay disability insurance for up to two years out of my own pocket. The problem with the Government taking over health care is that you cannot sue them for mal-practice in this sue happy culture we live in. My Doctor pays over 250,000 in malpractice insurance each year. The problem is that he passes that on to the consumer or insurance companies as a higher rate. If the insurance company will only pay 80% then this bill gets sent to the person that is sick. Are you somehow thinking that this extra 20% would be paid by the government through our taxes? That when they look at the next years revenue it will not be enough to cover these extras. Are you employed or are you destitute?

I have about a year left of COBRA, which I pay $376.00 a month for, after that I'm pretty much uninsurable.

That is cheap for COBRA you must be single. If you have paid into medicaid and are disabled you can get that back as a social security dependant.Or get a job.

Yes I worked at the same job for 29 years, my employer was exempt from taking out ss taxes as they had one with the county, social security did not allow us to pay into system.(however employees hired after 1986 had part "B" taken out.) I get close to $2,000.00 for early retirement, I was on disability Insurance for a year. I have deferred money I took out but I'm" Too Young"........I was taxed big time.

I've never heard of NOT paying into ss but I guess that is not un-heard of somewhere. I would suggest getting as many free clinics on your speed dial and start working under the table. Try and start a new career as you are young. Remember that the government should never be considered a sugar daddy as like a pimp they will someday take something back as repayment. Good luck at any rate and never give up.

Shit I'm on Mock!!Forget all that, just sue wally world they have Chinese insurance.::dlaugh::

Govt type employers do not pay into it, they have their own that they pay into. (it is tax break for co.)

I was considered a county employee and all I know Reganomics had a lot to with it, I have about four quarters left to pay. What do I do about "preconditions"? It could happen to anybody.

How did you wind up working a county / state type job and not having lifetime benefits for medical?

My mother worked for the NYC housing authority and retired with full benefits and a pension.

I put more info in your topic in the news forum. Maybe that will help you some. You'll need to get a jump on it now.

Mock2zuma, if you can afford it you can apply for and buy your own private insurance, there is a ton of info online for that stuff. Just go to any insurance company website.

From what I know of the govt. plan they're trying to push through now, it's only basic coverage, which means if you're really sick, you're pretty well fucked too. There's also some rumor going around that if you have private insurance and it runs out, you automatically (i think) go onto the new govt. plan and can never have private insurance again. Which will put all private insurance out of business if you ask me. I don't think this is true - it's insane if it is.

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha! Michael Moore as the source of anything more than the laughter of disbelief? Give me a break.

Do we have a problem with health insurance? Yes.
Are any of the plans to fix it currently on the table the answer? No.

Rate caps on procedures and frivolous lawsuits would go a much longer way toward fixing the problem. Much of the reason procedures cost so much stems from the inception of "UCR" payments.

In this system if a provider charges say $100 for a particular service the insurance will only pay the UCR (Usual and customary fee). This payment says that the rate for the service should only be 80% of the actual fee and they will pay 80% of that 80%. Sound complex? Yup.

So let's see:

$100 x 80% = $80
$80 x 80% = $64

Now since the provider only actually get 64% of what they feel they should charge they simply inflate the shit out of their charges in order to get what they really wanted for their service.

Add to this that we are a very litigious society the costs for malpractice insurance are at a confiscatory rate which makes doctors and hospitals up those rates even more so as to subsidize those inflated insurance charges.

Also, in consideration of the possibility of lawsuits being filed providers will order every test under the sun so as to avoid the possibility that someone will sue because they "missed something" because they failed to do such and such test.

This makes what should have been a $100 charge skyrocket to $5,000 or more.

Your health care system will never get get better, fairer or more efficient as long as yankee fuckwits like you defend the rights of health insurance/care providers to make massive amounts of cash while denying people essential healthcare to save money and this includes people with insurance up the ying yang.

I will continue to enjoy first class socialized healthcare while you pray you don't get seriously ill because it will land you in financial ruin sucker.

Cuba DOES have a cheaper, fairer, better healthcare system than the US - FACT.
You're not the only person to tell me that they are happy with socialized health care and the myths about long waits and poor care are just that, myths. In fact many people have told me that. Meanwhile I'm paying $1500 per month for a family of four with the premium going up every year. If I don't pay it and happen to get cancer then I will have to give up all my assets and everything I everworked for, leaving me with barely a pot to piss inbefore getting any assistance. Sure that sounds much better ::thumbs::

You are unfortunate that you live in a society that:-

A - Places money above everything else including life and death.

B - Is a society of "me" not "we".

Healthcare should be available to all regardless of personal income, the option of private health care should be available to those that can afford it, but if you are terminally or seriously ill your bank balance shouldn't determine how long or comfortably you live.

Socialized healthcare isn't perfect, no health care system is, but it is fairer, more efficient, and more reliable. The first concern of the people who provide healthcare shouldn't be profit margins but peoples lives.
