Because the differences in IQ have nothing to do with how well a child does in school ~ it's all the WHITE DEVIL doing this to the poor lil' black kids, kids with retarded parents, and children of bums who don't work because their stories are on the TV.

Asians excluded (I don't know why but they're all freaking smart...and the Asian population here isn't necessarily poor), doesn't it come down to income levels and parental education? With exceptions, the majority of the under performers in my area are Hispanics (and they're also, largely, low income in this area not to mention that their kids start the system as ESL learners). I don't think that's racist; it's just a fact.

To reiterate, I don't think white people are any smarter than any other race but face the facts, there are more Hispanic/Black people in poverty here ergo, if we teach to THAT level, we're dumbing down our system.

Cultures are going to have to stop whining and start working to change this. Dragging down others to equal the playing field is the wrong thing to do, but it is what we are doing right now (educationally and economically).

Wow, my kids all went to public schools with a large population of esl students. My kids did just fine. I did not see them getting dumber because of it. All three got a good education. They read, write and think proficiently. Each tested into gate in elementary school, took honor and AP classes in highschool. I think someone needs to descend from theory to reality.

If your kids were in GATE, honor and AP classes, they weren't getting an education with the ESL students at their school. As Cracker said, there's a top percentage of students who will do well regardless of NCLB etc. And parental involvement makes a huge difference. I know my kids will do well regardless but do I think my son (who isn't in GATE) should be in the same classes with ESL students? No (unless they're on the same level). My son didn't test in to GATE so he's in "regular" classes and earning straight A's with classmates who are flunking the same material...and he's bored to tears. There ought to be some middle ground.

FFS, I once asked his teacher about an upcoming test and she said she doesn't like to call them tests because some kids get nervous about the word.

Get real. I can pretty much guarantee if your kids were in GATE, honor and AP classes, for the most part they WEREN'T in classes with a large population of ESL students (even though the school might have had a number of ESL learners).

Our school has a large number of ESL learners and my daughter is in GATE. To be blunt, her GATE class is largely white/Asian bread (with some exceptions, of course). Despite having great grades, my son didn't test in to GATE so he's in a regular class (for English, history, science). He's earning straight A's with almost zero effort while many of his classmates (ESL students, poorer students etc.) are flunking. There ought to be a middle ground for kids like him. Maybe not GATE but more challenging than what he's getting for sure.

I just do not see that it matters. Kids just need to get through highschool and move on. Grow up, make good choices that help them find a groove that they can live with.

Holy shit! Someone just admitted they don't give a shit what their child learns as long as they get passed through school.

I always suspected some people think that way, but now I have proof. hahahaha

School isn't about passing (NCLB caters to folks like you), it is about self-actualization and learning all that you can. No knowledge is wasted.

Maybe I'm the odd one out, who knows. I'm not that interested in seeing grades. I ask everyday "What did you learn today?" If my child says "Nothing" then that is a day wasted in a young life. Too many days my child doesn't learn anything new. That makes me angry. I don't send my kids to school for social reasons, I want and expect learning to happen every single day. If my child isn't learning because the teacher has to go over and over the same crap for someone else's child, that is wrong.

I also think it's pretty sad that I had to teach my kids how to write in cursive because the schools don't do it anymore. I didn't realize it untill we got our passports and they didn't know how to sign their own names.
