Interestingly enough, the German wiki version already contains a link to an article where the theory is being discussed by scientists who say it's a workable way of navigation:

I always immediately wonder who taught the Vikings to do that. You'd have to have a pretty detailed understanding of several branches of what we consider 'modern' science to make that work. Digging a chunk out of the dirt and thinking hmmm doesn't cut it for me.

Exactly. That's why I love information about how prehistoric people or ancient civilizations used techniques and tools most people today would have difficulty understanding. Only explanation I see is that there has been a lot more human knowledge in prehistoric times than we thought. Do I think someone taught them? Dunno. Did someone show us how to make fire?

Anyway, news like that make me smile about the hubris of people praising 'modern' technology. Using an IPhone app to not get lost in a foreign city? Oh please, the vikings found their way to another continent using a bloody mineral.
