It's very hard to do...As it stands right now, Rachel Alexandra's owner/trainer have not even made the decision to run her in 3 wks...I'm sure they are waiting to see how she comes back after yesterdays race...Her owner has only had her for a couple of weeks, her previous owner had no intention of racing her yesterday & her new owner was thought the fool to do so...He's laughing all the way to the bank today.

I was surprised to see Calvin Borel not ride to try to win the Triple Crown on Mine That Bird.
It was a close race in the end, if the jockey on Mine That Bird made his move earlier and didn't try to bring him up on the inside instead I think he had a very good chance of taking the win. He should have anticipated the intentional traffic jam and done the unexpected by taking up up on the outside a little earlier. Even though it was made clear she was not completely on her game, I think it would have been a challenge for her none the less.
What was nice to see was the caliber of horseman Calvin Borel is. When he was going to the finish line and they gave him water to drink, he dumped it on the filly's head and chest before he took a sip. Bottle after bottle, and then someone handed him a sponge soaked in water for him to continue. I heard him say, "the horse comes first."
I rooted for the filly all the way, but I also wanted Mine That Bird to win and take the second leg of the Triple Crown. Decisions, decisions!
Looking at her past races she reminded me of Ruffian and of Secretariat. Both "freaks" in the equine world.
I hope she goes to the Belmont. Belmont Park is a gorgeous track, usually fast and has great solid footing. Both horses there will make a very exciting race.

I was surprised too...In every interview he has given since that win yesterday he has said she is the best horse he has EVER been on the back of...I'd be interested in knowing just how much time he spent with her in recent days, just for my own satisfaction, I'm curious...That is quite a statement for a jockey to make.

Duchess, you know the freaks when you ride them.
He was asked if he ever had her go her full speed and he said he never did and was afraid to. I knew exactly what he meant by that comment. I bet he gets off her shaking.
I had a little Morgan horse like that - tiny 14.2 hand gelding named Mickey. This sucker could run and if he grabbed hold of the bit and took off, he reached speeds that was frightening. I've been on plenty of fast horses but nothing like Mickey. It's all in their heart - literally and figuratively. These kinds of horses want to run - they never seem to run out of energy.
Have you ever had a horse like that? I'm sure you did!
Both Mine That Bird and Rachel Alexandra were hardly out of breath in the end and had plenty more to give. I bet if asked to go around again they would do so gladly and with gusto.

I did notice that neither one of them were barely blowing, if at all...Horseracing has changed so much in the past 20 yrs...The rules & regulations have become downright extreme...Those bitches, the powers that be, want everything from you pissing in a bottle to the name of every person in your stable and those affiliated with it...I never minded the piss test or even being fingerprinted but, the idea that anyone on the racing commission has the authority to come onto your property at any given time sucks, I don't like my friends just popping in without warning damned if I want any of those bitches here...Horseracing has given me a very nice life but, I'm glad we are not as heavily involved as we used to be...it's a tough business & often heartbreaking.
It sounds like both of you (Duch, Ant) have lots of firsthand experience with horseracing. While there are many things I dislike about the horseracing world (I don't even think a horse should be backed before they're 3, especially the way Thoroughbreds are built), I can't help but enjoy watching the races every year when I can. I used to be very good at picking the horse who would come in first or second.
I've missed them this year, but I was excited to see that a filly won! She's gorgeous too. You can bet her foals with be worth big bucks.

I heard gossip yesterday afternoon that her owner will breed her to a former Preakness winner that he now owns...He expectsRachel Alexandra to foalsome kinda "SuperHorse"...There is a plethera of gossip in this business so, take it with a grain of salt.
Rachel Alexandra is now the front runner for Horse Of The Year...If she gets it, Steve Asmussen will have trained Horse of The Year for 3 straight years...Whatta coup !

It is, isn't it...I may be wrong 'bout this but, I believe she was named after a previous owners' granddaughter.
Gwyneth Paltrow could learn something from the horse's owner.

They also thought Secretariat would get lots of great winners but it turned out that only his female offspring were winners in racing and produced mediocre males.
Same thing with No Nukes in the standardbred circuit - rarely does a 'superhorse' produce the next great superhorse.
Would be interesting to find out though. I hope they hold off breeding her until she's at least 6 or 7 though.

My stallion was a son of No Nukes. The one in the pic I posted. He looked JUST like his father.
No Nukes was insane. Took three fingers off his groom one time in the stables in the Meadowlands. I got to see him there when my friend Carole took me to a birthday lunch. She had horses in the stables at the track and gave me the grand tour.
I pat every horse including No Nukes and EVERYONE went batshit hollering to me to get away from him, he's vicious etc. Said he took three fingers off his groom the day before. He was as gentle as a lamb to me!
Later when he was moved from racing to breeding to Lobell farm (stables?) here my friend Sandy had the pleasure of handling him a few times. He was just as gentle with her too. She said they had a halter made out of motorcycle chain for him because he was so wild and vicious.
She laughed at them, put a normal leather halter on her and he behaved like a gentleman all they way to the breeding area.
Is No Nukes still alive?
Show us a pic of the filly!
I'm so 'out of the loop' now since I had to get rid of everything I don't even talk to my friend at Gateway Farm or Showplace Farms anymore.
Syber, race horses are actually handled better than most of the show jumpers you see out there. Granted there are scum bags who treat the animals poorly in every dicipline of horsemanship but all in all, a good horse is treated like it's golden. People like to remember the horrible stuff more. Like Duchess, I've seen some fucked up shit and I've had to repair a lot of it too when I took horses not able to race anymore and nurse them back to health so I can find permanent homes in pleasure riding communities.

Rachel Alexandra will not be running in the final jewel of The Triple Crown...Her owner thinks she needs more time between races...That leaves jockey Calvin Borel on the back of Mine That Bird & a chance to win his own Triple Crown of sorts...He is already predicting he will win that ever so lovely, million dollar purse...And they're off ! ::boobs::

You know I'll be watching!
I am a little disappointed though.
I feel she was put into the Preakness to spoil the chance of a TC winner. The owner knew Borel would ride her and he knew he'd bring her in first.
I think Mine That Bird would have taken the TC if Borel would have ridden him in all three races.
We need a new Triple Crown winner and Mine That Bird would have been it if they didn't put her in last month.
She IS a great horse, no doubt but I think they only put her in to gain some notoriety for her for her future career.
She's got plenty of time between the two races to go for the Belmont.
You going to the race Frank? It's "up the road" from you! I would if it weren't such a bitch of a ride into Long Island.
