THE REBEL FLAG

I don't think people will get carried away here. They have already refused to lower the Confederate flag.

I've learned so much since we've been talking about this. For example, I live within feet of the Mason-Dixon line. I never knew that! I know it's very colonial around here and there are a shit ton of little plaques dotting the area telling stuff like George Washington dined here/slept here/etc. Brick mansions and plantation homes are on just about every road surrounding me. I know the Underground Railroad went through here but I have never paid much attention to the history of the area.

I think I told you about the time I was in culture shock while visiting Montgomery, AL. I was visiting my boyfriend who was attending War College at Maxwell AFB at the time. He was from Virginia and did warn me....somewhat. Separate water fountains saying "whites only, along with designated faucets for the "colored." Separate everything. Signs on restaurants, no colored served, etc.....I just didn't see that kind of segregation growing up in Kansas, although Blacks had to sit in the back of the movie theater. I never gave it much thought until the Civil Rights Movement got into full swing......

One of the events at the family reunion in Mississippi years ago was the Underground Railroad. I am too old now but wonder if I would feel strange going to a family reunion where everyone is Black but you....I would go, I think, if I could get someone to go with me....

Well, IMO, the plan was to go as Witches, but they didn't want to wear Black, so they wore white and now look just like white idiots.

Not that I give two shits either way.

The mayor wants to exhume Nathan's body. What are the townspeople saying about that?

I know I mentioned recently that I watched Ken Burns' The Civil War about 6 months ago.

Southern soldiers were very good. Nathan Bedford had quite a reputation. Fierce and committed to wiping out Yankees.

To me, however, there's a difference between remembering individual soldiers and their sacrifice and continuing to glorify what the South was fighting for.

They wanted to destroy the Union. Did they really think they could survive economically on just cotton exports? Seems pretty short-sighted.

It's history and there are those who want to sanitize it.

They are on their way to the 1924 democrat national convention in N.Y. and they are participating not protesting it.

I just read that TVLand is pulling The Dukes Of Hazzard reruns because of the Confederate flag controversy.

And the snowball rolls down the hill .

If Tv Land pulled the show because of the car decal alone, I think that's really silly.

I didn't care for the show at all, but I watched a couple of episodes and it was mostly about family bonds and rebel-rousing in the community IIRC. There was nothing indicating the show was making a political or ideological statement in support of racial oppression or anything like that. It's just pop culture, not history or government.

I mean, it was really just some good ole boys, never meanin' no harm...

Ah well, their business and their choice.

In your opinion they stand for white supremacy, right? What made you come to that conclusion?

I've always perceived it to represent more than "just some good ole' boys, never meaning no harm."

HotD, you stealin' my material?

That was one of my fav shows when I was a teen. What teenage boy didn't like Daisy Duke? Plus you had car chases, cars jumping shit, stupid cops and a couple felons that couldn't own guns reaping havoc with their bows. Hell it was so popular here that two of the crew I ran with bought chargers just because of that show. One still owns it too.

That's retarded. Even black people like The Dukes of Hazzard. It was a black guy that came up with the Daisy Duke song.
