The Royals ~
6/11/11
the Queen's official birthday, Trooping the Colours~~

A colourful history: The Queen has been trooping since 1947

• The Queen, then Princess Elizabeth, first appeared mounted as Colonel of the Grenadier Guards in 1947, the first Birthday Parade to be held after the Second World War.

• In 1951, when King George VI fell ill, she deputised for him.

• During her reign, the Queen has attended every year except 1955, when it was cancelled because of the general strike.

• In 1981, a teenager fired six blank shots in the direction of the Queen as she made her way along the Mall. Her horse was startled, but the Queen regained control and carried on.

• After her horse Burmese was retired in 1986, the Queen decided that she would ride in a landau rather than train another horse.

• More than 1,300 soldiers will take part in the traditional display of pomp and pageantry.

• Trooping the Colour originated from traditional preparations for when colours or flags were carried, or "trooped", down the rank so that it could be seen and recognised by the soldiers.

• The Colour being paraded on Horse Guards this year is that of the 1st Battalion Scots Guards.

• The Queen's actual birthday was on April 21, when she turned 83.

• The curious decision to give monarchs two birthdays dates back to Edward VII who was born on November 9 but celebrated the anniversary in May and June as the weather was better during for outdoor events.

• Subsequent monarchs helpfully had birthdays at more convenient times of the year, but the Queen's father, King George VI, reintroduced the tradition which she has continued.

another royal wedding~

A day after the civil wedding that transformed one-time Olympic swimmer Charlene Wittstock into the Princess of Monaco, the South African and her prince, Albert II, say their vows today.

Albert's sisters, Princesses Caroline and Stephanie, were among several dozen guests at Friday's ceremony, which was held in the palace's sumptuous throne room where the prince's father, the late Rainier III, wed Hollywood legend Grace Kelly in 1956.

The blonde beauty died in a car crash nearly 30 years ago, and this tiny principality on the Riviera has been without a princess ever since.

The dress is to take pride of place at Buckingham Palace’s annual summer exhibition this year, ensuring we can bask in the afterglow of Kate and William’s wedding day just that little bit longer.
Then there are the diamond earrings given to the bride by her parents, bearing a diamond acorn to show the Middleton family’s new coat of arms.

And in the Ballroom, where the couple’s reception was held, visitors can see the 1936 Cartier tiara, glittering with 1,000 diamonds, that the Queen lent to Kate as her ‘something borrowed’ item.

The Duchess will join Her Majesty to formally open the exhibition this afternoon.

The heir to the throne walked at Loch Muick, near his Birkhall home on the Balmoral estate, to go mushroom-picking at the weekend. Carrying a wicker basket and a walking stick he hunted chanterelles in a forest while Prince Philip, Prince Edward and Princess Anne and guests bagged birds during a grouse shoot.

A tea cup and saucer will set you back £49 - but then again they are hand gilded in 22 carat gold.

They form part of the official commemorative china celebrating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee which goes on sale today.

The Queen herself has approved the fine bone china memorabilia which includes a £25 coffee mug, a 7in plate for £35 and 10in plate for £95 and a limited edition two-handled loving cup for £175.

Nuala McGourty, retail director at the Royal Collection, said: 'We wanted to create a design that was decorative and feminine, and that would provide the right provenance for the Diamond Jubilee.'

It was one of the great most nauseating disgusting love stories of the 20th Century. she was just some old whore from Baltimore.

The romance between Edward VIII and twice-divorced U.S. socialite Wallis Simpson rocked the nation and triggered a constitutional crisis.

History has portrayed Edward as the man who gave up the throne for love.

But now pictures have been unearthed which prove he fully intended to remain as King right up to his abdication on December 10, 1936.

They show him posing for artists in preparation for his coronation just a few days before he stepped down.

The portraits were discovered in archives owned by the Illustrated London News.

When the coronation finally took place on May 12, 1937, it was Edward’s brother Bertie who became George VI.

The secret lost Coronation Edition of the newspaper had been locked away in its archive by the publishers after the abdication was announced.

Tacky and tasteless, like all royal commemorative shit.

My dad collects the coins which are okay, but the rest of the royal tat is horrible.

When I think of Wallis Simpson smiling in that photo, yet at the end she had no one. On her death bed her 'nurse' allowed the press in to take photos of her without her consent, it's repulsive. So sad.

Simpson was a freak.

It was a fitting end for her.
