The amount raised astounds me because I couldn't see myself donating to anyone's private defense fund when, as local and state tax payers, we already support public defenders and district attorneys.
On the other hand, dollars paid by Florida tax payers won't be going to defend George Zimmerman (but will support the state's prosecution). So, essentially, only people who believe in his innocence (or at least believe he deserves a private defense) are footing the majority of his bill.
Is there a profit-motive, rather than just a cost-coverage motive? IDK. Assuming the fund is audited.
P.s. I'm seeing similar private defense donation strategies in lesser-profiled cases too.
