I've never tried to write on any furniture that's been chalk painted and haven't used it to create a distressed look, though it's used a lot for that technique and shabby-chic decor.
My table is made of knobby wood and painted white (not with chalk paint), so I didn't want a slick white new-looking cabinet. It works for me.
Anyway, chalk paint is good for texture and a quick way to reface something old or naturally distressed that you don't want to sand. But, it can be used to create a brand-new look too.
