Mother who 'led a double life' smothered her daughter.

Daily Mail
2nd August 2010

A woman smothered her three-year-old daughter with her Piglet toy, a court heard today.

Helen Caudwell, 42, allegedly used the soft toy to kill her daughter Bethany Caudwell-Kennerly after leading a double life, convincing two men they were the father of her child.

She fell pregnant with Bethany - her fourth child - while she was conducting relationships with three men in 2005.

Her husband at the time, Ian Caudwell, had tried to have a vasectomy reversed so that he could give his wife, of Cheadle Heath, Stockport, Greater Manchester, a fourth child but it had been unsuccessful and she had fallen pregnant by her lover Mark Davies, the court heard.

Bethany Caudwell-Kennerly: Her mother is accused of suffocating her with her toy piglet.

Supermarket Assistant Helen told both Mr Davies and her third boyfriend Miles Kennerly, of Sandbach, that they were Bethany's father and they both treated the girl as their own - unbeknown to the other.

Caudwell went on to divorce husband and father of her three other children Ian Caudwell and married Miles Kennerly in May 2009.

Within months Caudwell filed for divorce, the court heard. In the days leading up to the killing she had made comments about not wanting Miles Kennerly to see Bethany and 'doing away with herself'.

Bethany was found dead by Caudwell's concerned colleagues after she had told them she wasn't going to work because she had 'suffocated Bethany'.

Recent paternity tests confirmed Mark Davies to have been the girl's father.

Mr Ray Wrigglesworth QC, prosecuting at Manchester Crown court, said: 'In late 2004 Helen Caudwell met Mr Davies and began an affair with him.

'A few months later in February 2005 she started a relationship with a third man - Miles Kennerly. During this period she continued to have a sexual relationship with her husband, Mr Davies and Mr Kennerly.'

In October 2005 she became pregnant and in July, 2006, she gave birth to Bethany.

'During her pregnancy and after Bethany was born she continued to lead both Mr Davies and Mr Kennerly to believe that they were the father of Bethany.

'Both men visited the child, gave birthday presents and had regular meetings. Neither was aware of the other's existence.'

On the night of the October 2, Bethany, aged three, was sleeping at her mother's home.

'On this particular night mother and daughter were the sole occupants of that flat,' Mr Wrigglesworth said. 'The prosecution say that at some stage during that night the defendant, who knew what she was doing, intentionally and unlawfully suffocated her daughter.

'She had declared a few hours earlier that it was her intention to "do away with herself'. But the prosecution say that having killed the child, although she made an attempt to commit suicide, we say she didn't have the courage to take her own life.'

The court heard that after falling pregnant with Bethany, Caudwell and her first husband continued to live at the family home 'for the sake of the children'. But in 2007 Caudwell filed for divorce and moved in with Mr Kennerly at his home in Sandbach.

Mr Kennerly and Mr Davies continued to see Bethany, each believing she was their daughter.

Four months after marrying Mr Kennerly she moved out of their home into a flat. He continued to see Bethany - as did Mr Davies.

A week before Bethany's death Caudwell met with Mr Kennerly and told him she had instructed solicitors and that 'he wouldn't be allowed to contact his daughter'.

That night she was visited by her ex-husband who discussed her plans to divorce Mr Kennerly.
After he left, Caudwell spent over an hour on the phone to her mother during which she claimed 'I just feel like doing away with myself'.
Caudwell had been due to work the following morning at Morrisons supermarket in Edgeley and when she did not show up Kath Shaw was instructed to call her.
The court heard that Caudwell told Kath "I won't have a job anymore. I have done something stupid. I have suffocated Bethany."
Kath and her boss Paul Morgan were so concerned they ran to Caudwell's house where they found her with cuts to her wrists and Bethany dead on a double bed.
Mr Morgan told police he could hear Caudwell wailing 'I couldn't let him take her'.
police found a suicide note at the address which was written to ex-husband Ian saying 'All I have ever done is uspet people all my life. I can't stand the thought of him having Beth and making her life a misery as he has done mine.
'I am really sorry. I do love you and I always have done. Please look after my babies and help them to understand that I couldn't take anymore. We are at peace now and watching down on you and some time in years to come we will all be reunited. He can't hurt us anymore.'
The court heard she also instructed Ian Caudwell to withdraw all her money from her bank leaving her pin number and card.
During police interviews Caudwell claimed she must have rolled on top of Bethany during the night and suffocated her, but a post-mortem concluded that account was 'implausible'.
The jury heard that scientific evidence of the scene revealed that a soft toy Piglet which was found next to Bethany had an imprint of her dummy on it as well as saliva and blood.
Mr Wrigglesworth said this 'was moderately strong support that the imprint on the soft toy was made by the dummy (pacifier).
'This was put to the defendant that this was the method of suffocation. This toy was pressed down over the face down on to the dummy.'
Caudwell denies murder. The trial continues.
