I hate that shit. I guess SF is a sanctuary city for the illegal ivory trade too. ETA: good to see they are trying to address it in legislation, shame it got tabled. Plus, those vendors in Chinatown ain't going to give a shit, it will just drive the price higher.

Sort of like the tusks... those pictures of rhinos with their horns cut off are disturbing too.

It's not an SF-specific or California-specific issue, it's the same nationwide. But, Chinatown in San Francisco is the biggest problem area.

Legislative attempts to completely ban the trade of the ivories at the national level have failed in Congress. So, now states like California, Vermont, Alaska...are pushing to invoke state legislative bans. Only New York and New Jersey have successfully legislated such bans on a state-level thus far.
