What a very sad day for the victims' families, friends and the country.
While ISIS is reportedly being crippled greatly on the ground in Iraq and Syria by the U.S. and allied forces, it's nearly impossible to stop their global social media reach and ability to inspire disgruntled people around the world to inflict terror in their name. We all saw it coming a couple of years ago it's not gonna stop anytime soon.
I just caught an update on CBS News. As posted upthread, the Orlando killer reportedly hated gays and was incensed by gays showing affection in front of his wife and child. He called 911, gave his full name, and pledged allegiance to ISIS as he launched his attack. He wanted the attention and credit for the attack. He also mentioned the Tsaernaev brothers (Boston Marathon bombers) in that 911 call.
The killer was an American security guard whose parents immigrated from Afghanistan and he had been on FBI's radar for some reason in the past, but it's not clear yet if local LE was in-the-know.
It appears the FBI is considering this an act of terror inspired by hate. The killer, armed with a hand gun and an AR-15 rifle with a high capacity mag, chose a soft target populated by members of the gay community.
RIP to the deceased. I hope the wounded pull through and the death toll doesn't increase, but it probably will.
