Sharks are down 2-1. They play well from behind, but if they don't put it together by game 3, I fear the end is near.

RE: NHL

Here are my observations after 2 games:

San Jose's overall team speed is below average. They have not been able to create any space/separation in the first two games. Their scoring chances have been negligible and the goals they have scored have been ugly/fluky.

The Pens are not known to have a particularly strong defensive team and yet the Sharks have been smothered since the outset.

If Martin Jones hadn't been standing on his head, the Sharks would've been blown out a couple of times.

So, this got me thinking: who did SJ beat to get to the Finals?

They've gone through LA, Nashville and STL. Physical teams, but not known for speed like CHI, DALL or even MINNY.

To their credit, they went 12-6 in the first three rounds beating teams similar to themselves.

Unless they find another gear, PITT ends this in 5.

Not sure what the line is for tonight's game, but if I was betting I'd take the Sharks to win.

It's probably SJ -125 (or so).

I'd risk the $125 for the $100 payout.

I think the Sharks will put on a good 'backs to the wall' performance.

Edit: give me the 'over' 5.5 goals too.

I don't understand risking $125 for $100.

Football and basketball games are handicapped by a point spread.

For instance in tonight's CLE-GS game the spread is probably somewhere in the neighborhood of Golden State (-7).

If you think GS wins this game by more than 7, you'd place your water and win exactly that much in return. Bet $100 and win $100.

However, there's 'vigorish' or the 'juice' a 10% fee you pay when you lose.

In Vegas, to bet $100 on GS tonight, you'd walk up to the window at the Sports Book with $110 and purchase your ticket.

If you win, you'd get your $110 back plus the $100 you win.

Baseball and hockey are different because the scoring is typically lower than football and hoops, so they figured out another way to handicap them.

Yesterday's hockey game had this line:

San Jose -140, Pittsburgh +120.

You'd bet $140 on San Jose to win just $100.
You'd bet $100 on Pitt to win $120.

San Jose was a pretty prohibitive favorite, so the payoff isn't as good.

Meanwhile the Pens were an attractive 'dog'.

The 'juice' in baseball and hockey is already built I to the lines so you don't pay the additional 10% when you bet these sports.

For Vegas they want lines that are going to attract an equal amount of wagering for both teams in a given contest.

Hope that helps.

It does, thanks! I knew about the spread and I know a little about betting the ponies but I'm not at all knowledgeable and I very rarely bet.

You're on a roll lately, MS. The Sharks won 3 to 2 last night; the series is now 2 to 1 in favor of the Penguins.

What's your (virtual) bet for the next game?

I think (and hope) that San Jose is going to take game 4 and tie up the series at home tomorrow night.

Sharks have made a season out of winning when it counts, but Crosby is just un-fucking believable. I'm shaky but GO SHARKS!

Lol, The sharks and the penguins are the two fastest teams in the NHL. Both teams speed are way above average.

RE: NHL

I caught the last half of the game tonight; very fast-paced. I don't know the ins and outs of hockey, but it's fun to watch.

The Sharks lost to the Penguins; final score 3 to 1.

The Sharks need to win game 5 in Pittsburgh on Thursday night to stay alive -- they're in the same spot as the Warriors were going into game 5 against OKC in the NBA play-offs. Maybe the Sharks can win three in a row too?

This is a fun match up to watch, but it's actually making me a little dizzy. Very fast paced action.

San Jose is up by 1 in the middle of the 3rd.

I never knew how many hockey fans there were around here until the Finals. I see Sharks signs and stickers every few blocks. I hope San Jose wins tonight.

Hey HotD, this must be your first exposure to the NHL.

It's always been a fast moving sport.

In my opinion, it's the best sport to watch in person. You think it looks good on TV? Go to a game and see what you think.

Pittsburgh swarmed the Sharks for 50 of the 60 minutes last night, but in hockey your team can steal a win with a great goaltender.

Martin Jones is the only reason SJ is still alive.

"HE SHOOTS!... HE SCORES!!!... HEY GOALIE... YOU SUCK!!!"

Martin owned Bonino last night. Couture played lights out as well.

RE: NHL

I've watched hockey before, but not frequently and attentively.

It was always fast-paced, which I like. But, I don't remember teams being as lightning quick for a full hour like the match I watched last night.

I'm having a hard time getting away from the phone these days, but I'll try to watch the next game at the bar if I can. My tv is tiny.
