I think the Dems are right to be focusing on the midterms and not so concerned about having a clear 2020 frontrunner at this point.
Nobody saw Obama coming before he threw his hat in the ring in 2006/2007. And, Trump sure wasn't considered the frontrunner for Republicans when he announced his candidacy in 2015/2016.
Someone will emerge from the Dem pack in the next couple of years, just like in the past. I do think there will likely be a lot of Democrat presidential candidates for 2020, like there were Republican candidates in 2016. But, so long as they don't eat each other alive and the party unites around a clear message and goals, the one who wins the Democratic Primary will hopefully be able to give President Trump or another Republican candidate a run for his/her money.
