Background
In June 2013, Cherish was with her mother, Rayne Perrywinkle, and her siblings shopping for clothes at a Jacksonville, Florida Dollar Store.
Rayne, who was in a very contentious custody battle and apparently has some mental/emotional problems, did not have enough money to pay for it all.
That's when Smith, a convicted sex offender with a long criminal history, saw an opportunity to prey on the family.
Smith presented himself as good samaritan who wanted to help the family. He told Rayne that he was meeting his wife at a nearby Walmart and he'd drive the family there and buy them clothes.
Rayne made a very stupid and regrettable decision. She took him up on the offer, and off to Walmart they went in Smith's van.
After shopping for a couple of hours (his supposed wife never showed up), Smith offered to buy the family food at the adjacent McDonalds. He took Cherish with him.
