Same here.  I don't fear or resent immigrants either.

I feel for the plight of those who simply believe the American dream is alive and well and are willing to travel thousands of miles on foot to escape poverty, crime, suppression....  Still, after enduring the long trek, only about 20% of asylum-seekers will be permitted to stay.

I do believe that immigration needs to be well managed and controlled though, for all the obvious reasons -- including keeping known violent criminals out.

Anyway, people who fear/vilify immigrants and 'others' are more common than you think, I suspect.  We used to see them express it primarily on-line because they could do so anonymously.

But, it's become more common to see and hear American groups/individuals openly and proudly railing against migrants and spewing misinformation about them over the last couple of years, in my observation.   Trickle down branding and ignorance.

Migrants and asylum-seekers are now being labeled 'invaders' by the most fearful, resentful and ignorant.

I do not think people generally are ignorant or resentful EVEN if they do not want people coming to a country illegally and leeching off a country. THAT does not require ignorance, resentment or fear to RIGHTFULLY point out that it is wrong AND illegal.

It would be dishonest to suggest otherwise.

That is why you are suggesting it HoTD. You are dishonest.

Ask those same people if they are concerned about people applying to be a citizen or waiting in line? Do you think most of them would say that was wrong or that they hated immigrants and wanted those rights taken away?
Do you think that they a concerned about a caravan of illegal immigrants who they know WILL contain some Middle Eastern folk unable to be easily vetted and perhaps ISIS linked, Definitely MS13 members and likely more than a handful of human traffickers and criminals (not all but some)? Are they allowed to rationally and without fear or resentment or ignorance say "NO! We get to enforce our border and CHOSE who we wish in our country and we would prefer to be VERY selective about who comes in and are NOT prepared for accepting the undesirables"?

A bedraggled nuclear family fleeing crime is a much easier group to have empathy for than a mass of unvetted 7000 migrants illegally forcing themselves on a country.

In Australia we have Nauru camps and refuse to let immigrants illegally muscle in uninvited. It is fucking rude to do so.
