Some Marathoners slow, walk or sadly drop out under blazing sun
At Heartbreak Hill and beyond, the scorching heat has claimed experienced and novice runners alike in today’s Boston Marathon, where more than 22,000 braved the 80-degree temperatures for their own piece of the 26.2-mile course.
The National Weather Service had expected a high of 88 in Boston, though a breeze off the water stopped the mercury from ever rising past 77 at Logan Airport. Along the race route, however, it consistently reached the mid to upper 80s, forcing many runners to slow their pace, walk or simply opt out.
