no it's not small town america. holland/maumee/springfield used to be, and i think still wants to be, however urban sprawl has put a stop to this. but it is generally regarded as a good place to raise children, and a safe place to live.
which is why you people should find it so telling that nobody that lives there is particularly afraid for their own lives, or the lives of their own children. unless of course they appropriately had those fears before this unfortunate occurrence.
residents of the area are/were surprised, but not particularly scared, due to this incident.
