well look at the Zahra Baker case. reams and tons of evidence that just went to DA, and she's been gone for 4 months. it's impossible to predict because a case like this is very complicated legally and technically. you really don't take it to a Grand Jury or trial until you are sure you have everything you need to obtain a conviction.
so it's impossible to answer that.
pressers are at the discretion of the agency. they may say nothing until there is an arrest. even then, they may not say much because they don't want to taint a prospective jury pool with info overload. a defense attny. would be all over that screaming about pretrial publicity, unfair to client, change of venue blah blah blah.
