My guess is that while the drive and walkway were clear, there was ALOT of snow on the ground. Particularly in the back of a house and she's pregnant, maybe not dressed appropriately with snow boots, and didn't see anyone or anything out of place in the house. It was dark, except for that light on the stairs....no reason to go around back...I don't think I would have.
No, I wouldn't have either. Going up to the front door and ringing the bell and looking in the sidelites is one thing. Going around back, peeking in windows, etc - that's a whole other story, especially if you don't KNOW anything's wrong. Then you're getting into "prowler" mode.
