The police say garage. It is their job to take careful notes of a crime scene. The family was hysterical at the time. Let's go with what the police say.
Also, I do think it is important to know where the car was parked and if the garage door was open. From all reports, it seems the garage was open, which would make sense if you planned on not being home very long.
yes, I'm going with what Stooksbury stated, about it being in the garage, but it sure seems like this detail would be pretty easy to get straight, IMO
