I thought that, too. An argument against that is Johnny was street wise and would have known better than to be put at a disadvantage like being taped up.
When I was a kid, Richard Speck killed all of those nurses in Chicago. He convinced them to let him tie them up, promising he wouldn't hurt them. Right then I learned, NEVER let anyone tie you up, EVER. If they have a gun, you take your chances and fight. If you get shot it's better than what else could happen if you're tied (or taped) up.
That's the same thing they say about someone telling you to get in a car and go with them. Even if they have a knife or a gun, you are better to let them shoot you in public, where people can see, than to let them torture you slowly in private.
