I've heard of crazy people doing that because they think there will be a world wide disaster (as in the end of the world) that is going to lock down all the money and shut down banks and cash will be the only accepted form of currency.
I highly doubt that is what Lisa's parents were doing. I doubt there was a safe, but I don't doubt that Johnny could have told someone there was.
