For less than 100 bucks you can get a minimal alarm system with motion detector downstairs so you can sleep in safety. This intruder would have never made it upstairs without you knowing to have your gun out. And if he appeared you could shoot him dead and in some states with a NO RETREAT LAW you can shoot him dead even if he turns around and is running away. That way by entering your home he would be digging his own grave and you have every right to put him in it.
