My understanding from the family is that the injuries to the neck were most likely the result of very tight tape around the neck and the thrashing about of the victim while they were putting the tape on.

Watch this video and listen and watch how Maytee describes the way Johnny's head was taped...if this is a correct description, I think, that not only was there tape around his neck but completely around his whole face!!
