If Johnny feared him then I doubt he would do anything to incur that young man's wrath. If he was frightened that would imply he stayed away from him & he sure as hell wasn't going to provoke him to the point of murder. He provoked someone else instead, maybe he had his mothers mouth. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree & all that stuff.
