Did the Straub's ask anyone they trusted family or friend to double check Johnny and Lisa even when they were gone?

This is why i think that guns weren't used to kill them and the bags were instead. I think that if the person(s) that did this were checking out the house prior and knew that the straub's were gone out of town on the cruise, most parents let some "close" neighbors know and ask them to keep an eye on things. If those "close" neighbors then heard what may have sounded like a gunshot coming from anywhere in that area that would have alerted someone to call authorities or look around outside, limiting the time for the killer(s) to get away regardless of if the intent to kill johnny and lisa was planned or not.
