i want to elaborate a little on my reply about juveniles being tried as adults. just a point of interest.
this applies to florida where i worked, i don't know about other jurisdictions.
when a juvenile was going to be tried as an adult he/she was put into our adult jail, in a separate area where adult inmates could not see them. (not little kids, just 16 or 17)
if they turned 18 while awaiting trial, they were moved into adult population blocks at one minute after midnight on their birthday! that sure brings it home to them how serious their situation is.
