You CAN pick your children's friends. And you should.
I do feel badly for the boy, he didn't deserve to die, either. He never got a chance to get away from his creepy mother. Some people just never have a chance.
If you are raising your kids in a bad environment because you think you can't do better, at least try to do better. You CAN do better. Let your kids have a chance to be better than you are. It's called generation building. If you have kids, that is what you are supposed to do, not get drunk and high with them.

People rescue their kids from the streets and/or do whatever it takes
to keep them from it, all the time.
Its called loving your children more than you love yourself.
