Turn off automatic updates!! I've turned mine off years ago and have had a smooth running machine ever since.
You can manually update things if you need them but most times you don't.
Get rid of Norton or McAfee antivirus if you have it and replace it with Avast.
Use the windows firewall if you do not have a hardware firewall. If you are plugging in through a modem like a cable or FiOS modem, you have a hardware firewall.
You can get rid of all those updates in your control panel too but if you don't have any programs installed on that thing that you need, or files/photos you need, I'd wipe it all out instead and give it a good brainwashing.
