It's a preference based on personal philosophy regarding state intervention into personal matters and personal independence; not a result of anything missing or negative in terms of relationships. I've had really good long-term relationships that weren't any less fulfilling without a piece of paper or a tax break (along with a couple of flings and such along the way).
I just never felt compelled to make my commitments to the men that I loved/love "legal". Maybe if I had children, it would seem more appealing or necessary.
Anyway, just like I think consenting adults of all lifestyles should have the freedom to marry, I enjoy the fact that I have the freedom not to.
