whole life tariffs “inhuman”
#1
A European court has today ruled that whole life tariffs without the possibility of release go against the European human rights act and are “inhuman”.

Jeremy Bamber, who shot and killed five members of his family, and two other convicted murderers all given “whole life” tariffs for their crimes all applied to the European court and they have won their case.

The UK government condemned the ruling and said that in the 49 cases of whole life tariffs currently serving sentence in jail and said there no imminent releases happening in the forseeable future.

We need to leave the fucking EU now they interfere in everything we try and do. “Inhuman“? What about the inhuman acts of the offenders on their victims?
We need to punish the French, ignore the Germans and forgive the Russians - Condoleezza Rice.

I agree, I think the minute you completely disregard someone elses human rights, you should forfeit your own.

Fuck them rapists and child murderers.

You gotta be kiddin' me. Where is the sense in that decision? No death penalty, huh. ESAD is right & I agree with him, commit a crime like that & forfeit your rights. The people referenced don't deserve any courtesy.

Whoa. That's crazy! I may not be a big proponent of the death penalty but I have no problem sending a murderer to jail to rot for the rest of his hopefully miserable existence.

Why not?

I don't have strong opinions about it but I voted against it here in California recently in part because of costs. We haven't put someone to death here in years. Some people would argue that the way to fix that would be to speed up the appeals process etc. but I have no indication that there's anything like that in the works. We have over 700 inmates on death row here who are just as likely to die from old age or disease at this point.

I don't think it's a deterrent.

So...retribution? Okay, I get that. I don't fault people like the Alexander family for seeking Jodi's death. I'm not sure how I'd feel in a similar situation but having NOT been in one, I'm satisfied with just locking the fuckers up for life and never hearing from them again.

Finally, I find it a tiny bit barbaric. Not a lot but...kill a killer? Maybe we can chop off the hands of thieves too? In the scheme of things, that only accounts for a small part of my reservations about it though.

That's all. You won't find me out campaigning against it or anything but for now, I'll probably vote against it if the opportunity arises again. The measure didn't pass so we still have it here in California but there's issues regarding the injections that are still working there way through the courts. No executions in our foreseeable future.

I understand that. The state takes the violence out of the equation but it's still killing someone.

I'm not against the death penalty but occasionally I have reservations about it, particularly after I've heard of another person being released because of DNA evidence or other things that have come to light. My only concerns lie in someone who was wrongly convicted being put to death.
