THE GOOD OL' DAYS
#1

I grew up in small town America. Parents verbally corrected children who weren't their own, we cut across yards without fear of being shot and when our Mom's wanted us they hollered out the door for us. Do any of you live in a place like that today? Can your kids walk to the store? Play outside after dark?

1950 Camden NJ. My childhood was just as you described. Now Camden has the distinction of being the crime capital of the USA and I wouln't walk there with an armed escort.

Where I am now they own the street and ride all over on their bikes. Quite a few cops live near me. Kids come and play on the swingset and They know how to fight if they need to and yell loud.
Sometimes in the summer they stay out till dark but I can hear them usually. Another pleasant valley Sunday.
He ain't heavy, he's my brother.

That's exactly how I grew up. It's changed a lot, but still a decent place to raise a family. Auto vandalism is about as bad as it gets. My curfew growing up was when the street lights came on.

I just saw this on FB.

*I am afraid of a world ran by adults who were never been spanked as kids and got trophies for just participating*

We have turned our world into parents thinking being their children's friend is okay, letting the kids forget WHO are the adults and not teaching our kids how to lose.

Oh Tammy, that is ridiculous. You have no research to back up such a simplified idiology. If anyone touches a hair on my child's head, they die. I do not believe in corporal punishment. If you really want to inflict pain, you restrict computer privileges.

My God, of course, children have to earn their rewards, the trophies they earn is for participation, which is fine. It's not ok to bully children into submitting to our way of thinking. Before you beat me up for thinking this, my child goes to a private christian school, and we pray together every night, it's work, sometimes I am tired. But that is what being a real parent is, it pays off. My child is gorgeous.

I think it's a bad idea to give a trophy simply for participation. Trophies should be reserved for winning, it's something to strive for. Any tard can participate.

I agree Duchess. Kids these days are way too spoiled and brought up with this sense of entitlement. They need to learn to work for recognition and awards.

Our new neighborhood has sidewalks and street lights. I really like that. Growing up that's how our neighborhood was. In NY none if the hoods had sidewalks or street lights and I hated it. If we went for a walk in the late evening or out for Halloween when it's dark early, I always worried someone would get hit by a car.
