EBOLA IS IN AMERICA
(10-29-2014, 12:42 PM)username Wrote: I think it's a matter of principle for her now. She wants to demonstrate that, absent any symptoms of the illness, she's not infectious and it's wrong to quarantine her and others returning from Africa.

The science so far supports her. Maybe if Amber Vincent had contaminated a bunch of people on her travels (which remains to be seen), I'd feel differently but I think the states that are mandating quarantines are shooting the rest of us in the foot. Fewer healthcare workers are going to be willing to travel to Africa under those conditions.

Ebola is the new AIDS.

Principle should not be a factor at this unsure time for all. Why wait till a bunch a people are infected, before taking care. She just may be at the verge of symptoms, as the doc who went bowling before being diagnosed.
Right now, there have only been a few people infected, and they were successfully treated. That all can change overnight if the domino affect occurs from one infected person. To error on the side of caution is prudent.

What's wrong with making them stay in their own house alone for a bit. If nothing happens their clear. If they start bleeding blood from their eyes, get out the bleach.
Also if the Government is quarantining the soldiers coming back, why can't the states do it if its not that catchy.

It is when the principle involved is that fewer people will travel to Africa to help thereby increasing the risk to all of us. We're not going to be safe until there's some containment in Ebola land. Every country ought to be contributing to that effort.

We could close our borders to anyone traveling from that region, quarantine everyone who still chooses to go over there and generally hide but the science doesn't support that (nor do the numbers). Far, FAR more people die from the flu. You'd accomplish far more arguing for mandatory flu vaccines or quarantines.

I believe I've heard the soldiers (or at least the vast majority of them) won't even be exposed to sick patients.

To a large degree, military personnel give up their freedom when they enlist. They go where they're told without an option to just opt out (as it should be). Much different than a private citizen who gives up his/her job to go help out of the goodness of their hearts.

I don't think that quarantine is warranted though either especially if they're not in contact with Ebola patients. Stupid.

That's another restriction I would support though. I don't think that health care workers should necessarily return to their jobs immediately if it involves treating people and sticking their hands in assorted orifices.

I support the nurse's decision. So many people are losing their goddamn minds over this. Americans have a better chance of catching a cold than they do Ebola.

...and further more, they took away every single right that woman has as an American without one iota of scientific evidence to support their decision.

I'm getting on a plane in 3 days for a weekend trip. I'm not worried about catching a cold. Colds won't kill me.

Agreed. People who have been exposed to ebola are very aware of the risks and symptoms associated with contracting the virus. Let them stay at home and monitor themselves (they are healthcare workers for fucks sake) in the comforts of their own homes.

I just don't feel that Americans are truly at risk and I think some in the media are being terrorists about this. People are scared.

Yup, there needs to be a certain ammount of accountability with the media now days... But you'll never see it. There's a lot to be said for integrity in journalism. Seems they've all forgotten the first 3 rules of journalism:
1. Accuracy
2. Accuracy
3. Accuracy

5 people are being monitored in Indiana that just got back from Ebola land. They won't release the names or the counties they live in.

I wish I had tonsil stones. I've seen pictures of people digging them out with a paper clip, looks like fun. I also wish I had waxy ears. The Q-tip is barely yellow when I take it out of my ear, just once I'd like to pull out a big ball of wax.

See, they're little white balls of disgusting crud sticking out of your tonsils. You can take the end of a paper clip and pull those suckers out, some of them are really big as you're pulling them out, it's like pulling out a worm. Why can't I have those?
