The police in downtown Portsmouth N.H. have closed down the town because some AWOL soldier has barricaded himself in some building there. It should come out in the news soon.

A man wanted by the Army for desertion who barricaded himself in a downtown Portsmouth hotel has surrendered, police said.

Police had urged people to avoid the downtown area Thursday afternoon after the man barricaded himself in a room at the Hilton Garden Inn.

Police shut down Hanover Street alongside the hotel during the standoff and asked people to avoid the area.

The man's name has not been released. Deputy Police Chief Corey MacDonald said earlier in the afternoon that police considered him to potentially be armed and dangerous, but there were reports that no weapon was found.
