Don't forget Thinner and Pet Semetary.

I actually thought Pet Semetary was okay, not great by any means but okay.
I agree with your assessment of Thinner though, that was shit.
Also the miniseries of The Langoliers, that was awful.

Cujo was.......meh.

It didn't have much scope really, there is only so much you can do with a short novella about a rabid St Bernard.

Here is a list of all the film and TV adaptations of Kings work in chronological order.

There are more than you might think.

Why would they start now? Every fucking movie based on a King book has been a piece of shit. Every single one.......::wait::
No way... Cujo was AWESOME and both of the Shining movies were well done (though not quite as creepy as the book). The Mist was good too (though I hated the ending).

You know the part that scared me in "The Shining"? Lots of parts actually, but the playground and topiary garden where Danny was stalked by things.

Edited to add: in the book, not the shitty movie. ::bigg::

Scared the hell out of me and I don't scare easily. Considering that most of it was done within the scope of a CAR, it does a great job of pacing and keeping you at the edge of your seat. In addition, it has the whole subtext of karmic justice for the 'cheating wife' (apparently, King was getting back at someone in his own way).

Well, I know that The Mist seemed to hve tanked at the box office, but I'd kind of like to see it if it comes out on one of the premium channels or PPV. Just because I really liked the story.

Yeah, I thought that was the scariest part too. Well, that and the playground tunnel *shudder*.

But... I really have to also say that reading the book before watching the movie, makes the movie scarier, I think. Because you 'add things' to the movie from the book. At this point, I have a hard time remembering what was just in the book and what was actually in the movies.

Hah! That's the same list I was just looking at. I was a bit surprised to see that there are still several I haven't seen yet.

Dick Halloran died in the book and lived in the movie, which pleased me because I love Scatman Crothers... but Shelley Duvall? Jesus Christ, all she did was whine and snort. Horrible actress and completely unsuitable to play the part that was described as an attractive blonde.

Her role wasn't exactly memorable.

Whining, snorting and guffawing pretty much sums up all of her roles as an actress. Smiley_emoticons_wink

Maximum Overdrive - Emilio Estevez against intelligent killer motor vehicles - shit.
Creepshow 2 - Takes the anthology idea of Creepshow 1 and totally destroys it.
A return to Salems lot - just......awful
Sleepwalkers - deadly cat people.....suck!
Graveyard shit - rats.........suck!
Sometimes they come back - makes you wish they hadn't bothered returning.
The Mangler - Robert Englunds lowest career point at this time.
The rage - carrie 2 - A sequel not worthy of licking the ballsack of the original.
Dreamcatcher - Just.......awful.
The Secret Window - or much a do about nothing, more accurately.
sure some have not been so good, but the ones I posted earlier were excelled.

and on your list above - Maximum Overdrive is perfectly outrageous. the truck with the clown face is actually scary. Pet Semetary that was also mentioned is pretty good (THE FIRST ONE) and was well done at the time it came out. I also enjoyed Needful Things, which is one of my favorite King books and in the movie the devil was played by Max von Sydow, who is brilliant in most movies.

I think ultimately the point is that a lot of his books and short stories have been made into movies. Some are really really really good, and others are misses.

No.

Scatman Crothers dies in the film, don't you remember?

Jack Nicholson buries a big axe in his chest just after he first enters the hotel looking for Danny.

NO!

It's been years since I saw the movie, I guess my memory 'fixed' it the way I wanted it.

I saw Scatman Crothers on a plane while we were herded through first class... he was very old and frail and had three stewardesses guarding him from riff raff. I stared like a gibbering moron.

I agree, I enjoyed most of the Stephen King movies. I also like that most of the actors in his movies are not mainstram hollywood. Max von Sydow is a good example of a great actor, but not one you see in every other damn movie that comes out.
