The worst offenders of trying to tell you what to do out of work is the government. They call it a "Code of Conduct". And it's like they have a great power and they are just throwing their weight around.

I would fire someone who stole from me, lied to me, their work ethic was bad and they weren't earning their wages. They are just there for the money. You have to be on board with enthusiasm. I don't mind if you take sick leave for your children, but if you take a day off for the beach, I will do you a favour and give you permanent access to the beach, because you wont be coming to your place of work anymore.

Excuse me Mockers, but I think I summed that up rather eloquently and deserves a round of applause.

Are u kidding? You'd fire a good employee if you found out they fibbed on a day off to go to the beach? That's nuts. Good employers would turn a blind eye to a good employee taking "ahem", a sick day at the beach. Monkeybutt.

I think this is a cultural difference. In Australia, they get paid time off, so taking extra time off would be selfish... I guess? I don't want to assume everyone has my same worldview and demand adulation or anything.

If I'm reading that chart right, it says US has "0" paid vacation days and holidays.
That's bonkers! Not only paid vacation days, and holidays, US also has paid sick days!

US doesn't average yearly paid vacation days across business. We do have paid sick days, but so does everywhere else, and they average paid holidays/vacations much higher than us. Here's the chart for maternity leave!

Canada gives like 3-6 months for both mothers AND fathers paid leave. UK gives mother's 90% pay for like 340 days.

People do have the right to free speech, no doubt about that, however, that does not mean there are never going to be consequences. If your going to be yapping about the boss and are happening to do that in a public place for gods sake learn how to speak directly to the person you intend the words for, and do be the kind of blabermouth that can be heard 2 tables away. I hate that, can barely hear the person across from me but can hear all about that loud mouth fuck at another table, Inside voice dumbass. If you work with the public in any fashion, you need to be circumspect in what you say where. If I owned my own company, did not work with the public and had an employee out there yammering on and badmouthing me or my company I would fire his ass just because he can't be trusted.

Nice part for American companies is that even if a valid wrongful termination suit is levied against you, you can pay the money and still not be represented by that individual. In some cases, where the individual casts such a negative light that public perception of your brand could decline, clearly distancing company views from the personal views of that former employee could even make the money for damages seem like advertising expense.

In countries like China, you have to rehire people you wrongfully terminate. I can't imagine that shitstorm.

Kid? I never kid. If they are a good employee not for one day at the beach, but I would be disappointed at the dishonesty. Nurses get 6 weeks annual leave a year. A normal worker gets 4 weeks. Use one of your annual leave days to go.

To be fair to me User, I am very good to those who work for me over the years, and I am flexible when they have to take time off, it is inconvenient but I manage because I have such a good working relationship.

This happened when the nanny became pregnant with twins and would have days where she had complications. So don't vilify me I'm not Donald Trump.

I wonder what it is like to engage in a conversation where someone ignores you.
